About this role
The Lead Tool & Die Specialist reports to the Tool & Die Supervisor and is responsible for assisting department leaders with successful completion of scheduled and unscheduled work within the shop. Lead by example, this is primarily but not limited to, performing preventative maintenance, repairs, ECO’s, jig/fixture work, and miscellaneous request asked of the shop.

- Oversee hourly Tool and Die Specialists and Apprentices to ensure work orders are completed and closed in a timely manner
- Coordinate tooling changes for production in the High Pressure Die Casting department
- Communicate, define, and delegate daily task between shifts to ensure jobs continue the same path and direction
- Update leadership stakeholders (Production, Maintenance, Sub-Assembly) on all job statuses
- Develop and train teams with skill leveling
- Support engineering to evaluate feasibility and implementation of tooling changes and part processing/troubleshooting
- Completion of Tesla’s Tool and Die Apprenticeship program or currently a Tool and Die Specialist, S3 (III) or above that meet internal mobility eligibility requirements
- Safety mindset and EPP qualifications
- 3+ years of hands-on experience with structural aluminum die casting dies, including corrective and preventive maintenance; proficiency in precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, height gauges, and other shop measurement tools; ability to verify fits, clearances, wear conditions, and repair quality; ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and blueprints for die repair, tooling modifications, detail fabrication, and repair work
- Understanding of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing), including datums, symbols, and interpretation of tooling and part prints; welding proficiency for tooling repair with knowledge of tooling materials, heat control, weld quality, and producing repairs that can be machined and spotted back to print specifications; strong knowledge of parting lines and spotting practices to diagnose shutoff issues, evaluate bearing surfaces, identify flash conditions, and correct mismatch problems; hands-on experience with manual machine shop equipment including milling machines, surface grinders, and lathes to machine tooling details and perform repairs to print and fit requirements; and CAD experience preferred, with the ability to reference 3D models and drawings and support tooling changes and print interpretation
- Strong analytic problem-solving skills and organizational skills with meticulous attention to detail
- Ability to work with and develop production performance metrics (efficiency, quality, safety, throughput, costs) Proficient with common MS office programs (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project)
- Must have command of the English language, both written and verbal
Essential Physical Demands
- Ability to stand and walk for up to 12 hours/day on varied and uneven terrain including concrete surfaces
- Stoop, lay, bend, reach, squat, kneel, crouch, twist and crawl for extended periods of time, including up to 12 hours/day
- Must be able to frequently and repetitively lift/carry 30 lbs. and up to 50 lbs. infrequently
- Frequently and repetitively push heavy carts and dollies
- The ability to carry up to 20 lbs. up and down flights of stairs multiple times a day
- Ability to drive cars & trucks back and forth while being outside of the factory for up to 12 hours/day
- Climb and maintain balance on ladders, scaffolding or other high structures while bearing hand tools on their person. For example, climbing ladders while wearing a tool belt
- Ability to identify issues in a work process and receive safety signals using sight, touch, and hearing
- Follow all safety rules and guidelines including wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) while performing the above-mentioned activities
- Ability to correctly wear respiratory protection such as half and full-face respirators, if required, for up to 12 hours/day
- Ability to perform the above-mentioned activities while working in outdoor weather conditions
