This role is a hybrid work arrangement. Work schedule to be discussed with the Hiring Manager according to the guidelines defined by the department.
Your Role:
Reporting to the Senior Director, Human Resources (English Services / News), you will serve as a key member of the leadership team for CBC News Ontario. Your deep expertise and broad knowledge across all HR functional areas will be vital assets as you partner with the newsroom and operational leadership to drive successful workforce strategies. In this role, you will support strategic and operational plans, leverage internal HR centers of expertise, and offer proactive insights, tools, and analytics to address key business and people challenges.
You will lead, manage, and coach a team of Senior HR Generalists responsible for providing HR guidance and advisory services across Ontario News operations. You will foster a solutions-oriented mindset within your team, encouraging creativity, adaptability, open-mindedness, and rapid, effective resolution of issues.
This is a temporary position for a period of 1 year. The location of this position is flexible within Canada where there is a CBC/Radio-Canada broadcast station.
Key Responsibilities:
- Cultivate strategic partnerships and robust stakeholder relationships across CBC News Local Ontario and Network News within English Services to shape decision-making;
- Lead the implementation of the people management strategy for newsroom and programming teams across Ontario;
- Provide expert HR guidance to senior leaders and play an integral role in operational planning;
- Conduct HR and industrial relations (IR) investigations as needed;
- Deploy and execute medium- and long-term HR strategies to address complex operational and programming priorities;
- Foster positive, productive union-management relations by maintaining effective working relationships with local and national union representatives (e.g., CMG);
- Work closely with your team members, overseeing their activities and developing their professional potential;
- Participate in regional and national HR initiatives and strategic projects.
Qualifications:
- Degree in Human Resources Management, Industrial Relations, or equivalent field (CHRP/CHRL professional designation preferred);
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive HR experience in a complex matrix, unionized environment (preferably within media, broadcasting, or a federally regulated sector);
- In-depth understanding of federally regulated workplaces, industrial relations, and collective bargaining agreements;
- Demonstrated commitment to advancing equity, diversity, accessibility, and inclusion across CBC News Ontario;
- Superior interpersonal and communication skills, with proven ability to build strong partnerships and influence stakeholders at all organizational levels;
- Strong leadership and coaching abilities with a track record of motivating and developing teams;
- Bilingualism in English and French is required, or a strong commitment to develop French language skills.
