About the Systems Technologies Group

The Systems Technologies Group (STG) develops advanced imaging, image processing, embedded software, navigation, and control system technologies that improve product performance and mission effectiveness across a broad portfolio of electro-optical and infrared (EO/IR) systems. STG serves as a centralized technology organization focused on developing, evaluating, testing, and deploying reusable technologies, algorithms, and engineering best practices.

STG's mission is to transform specialized technical expertise into scalable solutions that create competitive advantages in imaging, processing, and control technologies.

Position Overview

As an Engineering Intern within the Systems Technologies Group, you will work alongside experienced engineers and subject matter experts in imaging systems, image quality, control systems, embedded software, and advanced algorithm development. This internship provides hands-on experience developing technologies that enhance image quality, improve system stability, and enable next-generation sensing capabilities.

The position is designed for students who are passionate about solving challenging technical problems and who are interested in applying engineering principles to real-world aerospace, defense, and advanced sensing applications.

Responsibilities

The intern may support one or more of the following technical areas:

Control Systems & Navigation

- Assist with modeling and simulation of control systems using MATLAB and Simulink.
- Support testing and analysis of stabilization and tracking systems.
- Evaluate control system performance using collected test data.
- Help develop tools and automation scripts for engineering analysis.

Imaging & Image Quality

- Support image quality evaluations and performance assessments.
- Assist with image processing algorithm development and testing.
- Analyze image artifacts and develop methods to improve image clarity and stability.
- Participate in laboratory and field testing activities.

Embedded Software & Firmware

- Assist in development of embedded software in C++.
- Support integration of algorithms onto FPGA, embedded processor, or heterogeneous computing platforms.
- Develop software test utilities, automated verification tools, and documentation.
- Participate in software debugging and performance optimization.

Qualifications

Required

- Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in: Electrical Engineering
- Computer Engineering
- Computer Science
- Aerospace Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering

- Minimum GPA of 3.5
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary engineering environment.

Preferred

- Experience or coursework in one or more of the following: Control systems
- Signal processing
- Image processing
- Computer vision
- Embedded systems
- C++
- Python
- MATLAB/Simulink
- FPGA development
- Sensors, navigation systems, or robotics

Pay and Schedule

The internship ideally lasts all of 2027 – part time during the spring and fall semesters and full time during the summer semester. The pay is $35/hr. Alternative schedules can be discussed depending on the candidate.

Applicants must be either a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, legal permanent resident, asylee, refugee or must be eligible to apply for and obtain the appropriate export control license from the U.S. Departments of State or Commerce.
