Position Summary
The Physician Liaison serves as the primary ambassador for Birmingham Gastroenterology Associates, responsible for strengthening relationships with referring providers and healthcare organizations throughout the community. This role focuses on increasing awareness of the practice's physicians, advanced practice providers, endoscopy services, and specialty GI programs while driving referral growth and improving access to care.
The ideal candidate is a relationship-focused healthcare professional who understands the referral dynamics between primary care providers, hospital systems, specialists, and gastroenterologists. The Physician Liaison will work closely with physicians, operations leadership, and clinical teams to support strategic growth initiatives and enhance the experience of referring providers and patients.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Referral Development & Physician Relations
- Build and maintain strong relationships with primary care providers, family medicine physicians, internists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, hospitalists, surgeons, oncologists, and other specialty referral sources.
- Conduct regular in-person visits to physician offices, health systems, clinics, and community healthcare organizations.
- Educate referral sources regarding practice services, provider specialties, procedure availability, and patient referral processes.
- Guide referring offices regarding access, scheduling, and practice-related concerns.
- Strengthen referral relationships and identify opportunities to increase procedural and consultation volume.
- Develop referral source profiles and maintain accurate documentation of outreach activities.
Practice Growth Initiatives
- Promote the practice's gastroenterology, pharmacy, and hepatology services, including: Colonoscopy and colorectal cancer screening
- Upper endoscopy (EGD)
- Capsule endoscopy
- Management of GERD, IBS, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, and other GI disorders
- Liver disease and hepatology services
- Advanced endoscopy services (as applicable)
- Partner with providers and leadership to execute growth strategies for clinic and endoscopy center volumes.
- Identify underserved markets and opportunities for expansion of GI services.
- Monitor referral patterns, physician market share, and competitive activity.
- Increase pharmacy growth
Provider Outreach & Community Engagement
- Represent the practice at medical society meetings,community health events, employer wellness initiatives, and networking functions.
- Coordinate provider introductions, lunch-and-learn presentations, and continuing education opportunities for referral sources.
- Assist with community outreach campaigns emphasizing preventive screening and digestive health awareness.
- Support educational initiatives related to colorectal cancer prevention and GI health.
Patient Access & Referral Management
- Collaborate with scheduling, clinical, and operational teams to ensure timely patient access.
- Monitor referral-to-consult and referral-to-procedure conversion rates.
- Identify barriers that may impact patient scheduling, procedure completion, or referral satisfaction.
- Facilitate resolution of referral and service issues to improve referring provider experience.

Data Analysis & Reporting
- Analyze referral trends and physician utilization patterns.
- Develop monthly reports detailing: Outreach activity
- New referral source development
- Referral growth
- Procedure volume trends
- Market opportunities
- Utilize practice management data to measure ROI on business development efforts.
- Present recommendations and strategic insights to leadership.

Requirements
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Healthcare Administration, Business, Marketing, Communications, or related field preferred.
- Equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be considered.
Experience
- Minimum 3 years of healthcare business development, physician liaison, physician relations, healthcare sales, or provider outreach experience required.
- Previous experience calling on Primary Care Physicians preferred.
- Experience working with gastroenterology, ambulatory surgery centers, specialty physician practices, hospitals, or healthcare organizations strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated track record of referral growth and relationship development.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Understanding of gastroenterology services and referral patterns.
- Knowledge of outpatient medical practice operations and procedural scheduling workflows.
- Exceptional relationship-building and networking skills.
- Strong presentation and public speaking abilities.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to analyze referral data and develop actionable growth strategies.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, CRM software, and business analytics tools.
- Ability to work independently and manage a geographic territory effectively.
Working Conditions
- Frequent local travel to physician offices, hospitals, health systems, and community events.
- Occasional early morning, evening, or weekend events.
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation required. Clean MVR needed.
