About this role

The Senior Corporate Banker (Subdirector) leads client relationships, drives business growth, and ensures the delivery of high-quality service for a Middle Markets portfolio within the consumer sector.

Acting as the primary senior point of contact, the role owns coverage strategy and execution, mobilizing internal teams to deliver integrated solutions and maintaining strong portfolio governance.  The role primarily covers medium-sized companies, family-owned businesses, sponsor-backed companies, and local or regional corporate groups, often working directly with owners, CEOs, CFOs, and treasurers.

The role involves analyzing financial performance and sector dynamics, leading sales objectives, and driving the acquisition of new clients. Success requires balancing relationship depth, profitable growth, credit discipline, and speed of execution across a focused portfolio. Core responsibilities include:

● Relationship Management: Building and maintaining strong relationships with both existing and prospective clients, serving as the primary point of contact and senior sponsor for key relationships. Developing trusted relationships with owners, CEOs, CFOs, and treasurers, and understanding both the company’s financial needs and the wider objectives of its shareholders.

● Sales and Growth: Driving revenue by identifying cross-selling opportunities and acquiring new clients; leading client planning, pipeline management, and prioritization to improve wallet share and returns. Identifying opportunities across lending, cash management, trade finance, foreign exchange, interest-rate hedging, deposits, and other core banking products. Maintaining strong prospecting discipline and converting local and regional opportunities into sustainable relationships.

● Portfolio Leadership: Leading the preparation and presentation of client reviews, financial analyses, and risk assessments; ensuring proactive monitoring, early-warning identification, and disciplined remediation actions where required. Maintaining close visibility of liquidity, leverage, cash-flow generation, working capital, collateral, shareholder support, and refinancing needs. Escalating deterioration early and taking practical actions to protect asset quality.

● Cross-Functional Coordination: Orchestrating cross-functional teams (Risk, Compliance, Legal, Operations, and product partners) to ensure timely origination, structuring, approvals, execution, and onboarding/implementation—balancing speed-to-market with strong governance. Coordinating primarily with local and regional product, credit, and operational teams, while ensuring that solutions remain proportionate to the client’s scale and complexity.

● Operational and Control Oversight: Ensuring timely processing of credit facilities, loans, and documentation, while maintaining high standards across KYC, due diligence, and internal policies and external regulations. Taking ownership of documentation quality, onboarding progress, covenant tracking, account conduct, and timely resolution of operational issues across a portfolio where relationship responsiveness is a key differentiator.

● Monitoring: Overseeing overall portfolio health to identify potential risks, ensure adherence to internal policies and external regulations, and protect HSBC’s risk appetite and reputation. Monitoring concentration risk, sector exposure, related-party transactions, informal support assumptions, and customer or supplier concentration.

Required Skills and Qualifications

● Education: University degree in Business, Finance, Actuarial Science, Engineering, or related field.

● Postgraduate degree (desirable): MBA, Management, Risk Management, Finance.

● Experience: 6+ years in corporate banking, institutional sales, or senior client relationship management, with demonstrated accountability for revenue delivery, credit outcomes, and portfolio governance. Experience covering medium-sized companies, privately owned groups, entrepreneurs, or regional corporates is particularly valuable.

● Communication: Excellent interpersonal and verbal/written communication skills, with executive presence and the ability to influence at CFO/Treasurer/Owner level. Demonstrated ability to build credibility with business owners and decision-makers who may combine corporate, family, and shareholder perspectives.

● Languages: Intermediate English proficiency.

● Analytical Skills: Strong ability to analyze financial data, market trends, and client performance, translating insights into actionable coverage and risk strategies. Strong understanding of the consumer sector, including key industry KPIs, competitive dynamics, and macroeconomic drivers. Additional emphasis should be placed on cash-flow quality, working capital seasonality, debt-service capacity, collateral, shareholder liquidity, and the reliability of management information.

● Sales and Relationship Skills: Strong consultative selling capability, with the ability to identify unmet needs, deepen wallet share, develop local market intelligence, and turn relationship knowledge into actionable opportunities.

● Credit Skills: Sound understanding of credit assessment, financial spreading, covenant analysis, facility structuring, collateral, guarantees, and early-warning indicators.

● Proven track record (desirable): Origination and/or execution experience in syndicated loans, DCM, and structured finance, including coordination with specialist teams and leading client dialogue through execution milestones. Experience in bilateral and club lending, asset-based lending, working-capital facilities, trade finance, acquisition finance, or privately negotiated transactions may be equally relevant.
