About this role
The University of Virginia’s College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences is seeking a talented Graphic Designer to support communications and marketing work within UVA’s largest academic unit. This role brings A&S initiatives, accomplishments, and research to life through creative and visual storytelling across all channels.
Reporting to the Director of Content & Creative Services, the Graphic Designer will execute visual design work—from concept development to final production—translating marketing strategy into clear, effective, on-brand materials across a multi-channel communications matrix.
The successful candidate will be familiar with emerging design trends and have a strong grasp of page layout, typography, color theory, digital accessibility, and the application of visual assets such as photography and illustration.
Responsibilities:
- Design compelling marketing and communications materials for Arts & Sciences
- Apply design techniques, tools, and layout/typography principles to execute marketing strategy across formats
- Implement existing brand identity consistently across all design touchpoints
- Follow University and A&S graphic standards, style guides, and design processes
- Participate and proactively engage in creative briefings, design reviews, and content planning meetings
- Contribute to a positive team culture defined by collaboration, optimism, and a firm belief in the value of a liberal arts education
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree and at least 2 years of relevant work experience
- Advanced knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles, including Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop)
- Demonstrated understanding of page layout, typography, color theory, and use of photography/illustration assets
- Familiarity with the design process from concept through final production, including pre-press and printing essentials and best practices
Preferred Qualifications:
- Demonstrated capability of operating in an agile and collaborative work environment
- Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills
- Experience executing design concepts across multiple platforms
- Ability to manage several design projects and evolving priorities at once while meeting deadlines
- Experience with simple animation (Adobe After Effects)
- User experience/interface design experience
- Experience designing for a strongly branded organization or higher education
Anticipated Hiring Range: $60,000–$80,000
Location: Charlottesville, VA
This position is located in Charlottesville, VA. A hybrid work schedule is available, dependent upon the needs of the department and the incumbent's performance.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
