Brooklyn College Community Partnership (BCCP) seeks part-time Sports Instructors for its DYCD-funded COMPASS middle school program. Sports Instructors organize tournaments, lead practices, provide hands-on coaching, plan skill-building lessons, and model positive sportsmanship at all times.
The Sports Instructors participate in ongoing professional development and contribute to a culture of collaboration and continuous learning.
Responsibilities:
- Lead structured basketball or volleyball practices that build fundamental skills and teamwork.
- Organize and coordinate weekly sports tournaments and friendly competitions.
- Provide hands-on coaching, feedback, and individualized support to participants.
- In collaboration with the Content Specialist, plan age-appropriate, skill-building lessons that promote physical fitness and athletic development.
- Model positive sportsmanship, teamwork, and respectful communication at all times.
- Maintain a safe and inclusive environment that encourages student participation and growth.
- Supervise youth during sports activities and ensure adherence to program rules and safety protocols.
- Ensure all equipment is age-appropriate, safe, and in proper working condition, including completing scheduled safety inspections to maintain a secure environment.
- Collaborate with Program Directors to schedule practices, games, and culminating events.
- Attend weekly check-ins with supervisor and participate in ongoing professional development provided by BCCP and DYCD’s professional development partners.
- Comply with NYC DOE, DOHMH, DYCD, and NYS SACC regulations.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- A high school diploma or equivalent is required; current college undergraduates or higher are preferred.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience coaching youth in a structured sports setting
- Content expert in the designated sports
- Strong knowledge of the NYC DOE Public School system
- Strong communication skills
- Strong interest in community work and youth development
- Proficient in MS Office and Google Workspace
- Commitment to equity and to implementing culturally responsive teaching practices
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 2 to 6 PM (up to 18 hours per week)
About BCCP: The Brooklyn College Community Partnership (BCCP), operating under the fiscal sponsorship of RFCUNY, is a community-based organization that provides youth development programs connecting Brooklyn College with surrounding neighborhoods. Through after-school and extracurricular initiatives in NYC Public Schools and at the Brooklyn College Art Lab (BCAL), BCCP offers holistic, interdisciplinary programming rooted in the principles of Positive Youth Development. Our activities empower students, spark creativity, and support their academic, social-emotional, and developmental growth while strengthening connections among youth, families, and the broader community.
Pay Range:
$20 - $25 per hour
