Your career opportunity

We see ourselves as being a technology company within the bank, building solutions that support HSBC’s wider strategy and advancing our DevOps and Agile agenda. The department is around 450 people across seven locations - Hong Kong, China, India, Poland, UK, USA and Canada - with teams that are mostly co-located and some working across geographies as part of HSBC’s hybrid working strategy. As a Senior Software Engineer you’ll help evolve our on-premises digital platform and contribute to flagship products such as HSBC Evolve as well as tools that support Sales teams and the creation and delivery of research content. You’ll work in a modern engineering environment where experimentation is encouraged and learning from controlled failure is part of how we improve.

What you’ll do

- Work within a team of 4-6 people with a dedicated product owner, sometimes across locations
- Take business requirements, break them into user stories and deliver each story iteratively to production
- Provide product support as part of the team’s ownership model - the team builds it and the team supports it
- Identify areas of technical debt and balance this with delivery of new functionality
- Design solutions for new items and ensure alignment with technology guidelines and constraints
- Pair with other engineers to build, review and improve solutions

What you need to have to succeed in this role

- Show willingness to learn multiple programming languages
- Demonstrate hands-on experience with at least one programming language
- Apply working knowledge of Unix
- Understand databases from a consumer point of view
- Use HTTP APIs such as RESTful APIs
- Communicate effectively in English within an engineering team
