YOUR ROLE

The Applied Mathematics Team (AMT) , part of System Research & Applications (SRA) , develops advanced AI and mathematical technologies to address complex industrial challenges and create competitive advantages for ST. We work at the intersection of AI, mathematical modeling, simulation, digital twins, robotics, and software engineering, transforming cutting-edge research into impactful industrial solutions.

Job Summary

We are looking for an exceptional AI Research Scientist passionate about advancing the state of the art in AI-driven modeling of complex systems .

You will explore how foundation models, scientific machine learning, multimodal learning, and simulation can be used to model, understand, and optimize physical and industrial processes. A key focus of the role is the development of intelligent systems for Robotics and Vision-Language-Action (VLA) applications through advanced modeling, simulation, and foundation-model technologies. The role also includes the development of physical modeling algorithms for Digital Twins , enabling the creation of predictive, adaptive, and explainable representations of complex physical systems.

Key Responsibilities

- Drive research in AI-driven modeling, robotics, and intelligent systems.
- Design and develop advanced AI models for physical, industrial, and embodied environments.
- Build prototypes and proof-of-concepts based on emerging AI technologies.
- Contribute to multimodal AI, simulation-driven learning, robotic intelligence, and VLA systems.
- Design and develop physical modeling algorithms and hybrid AI-physics models to support next-generation Digital Twin solutions.
- Create modeling frameworks that combine data, domain knowledge, and physical constraints.
- Design rigorous experiments and evaluation methodologies.
- Publish results, contribute to patents, and communicate technical findings.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across research, engineering, and product groups.

Required Qualifications

Technical Skills

- Strong hands-on AI experimentation and software development skills.
- Ability to independently identify problems, formulate research hypotheses, and execute projects.
- Expertise in one or more of:  Multimodal Learning
- Time-Series Modeling
- Physics-Informed Neural Networks
- Reinforcement Learning
- Simulation
- Representation Learning
- AI Evaluation

- Deep expertise in Robotics and Vision-Language-Action (VLA) systems , including modeling, simulation, and learning for physical or embodied environments and the development of physical modeling algorithms for Digital Twins.
- Strong Python and modern AI framework skills (PyTorch, JAX, TensorFlow).
- Experience with scientific experimentation and benchmarking.

- Experience with foundation model training or adaptation.
- Open-source or research community contributions.

The expected salary range for this position is €38,000 – €45,000 gross annual salary (RAL), plus variable pay and productivity premium.

In accordance with the EU Pay Transparency Directive and applicable Italian legislation, this compensation range has been determined based on objective, gender-neutral criteria, including job responsibilities, required skills, relevant experience, qualifications, and market benchmarks. Placement within the range will depend on the candidate’s profile and demonstrated competencies. The final offer will be made in compliance with the applicable National Collective Bargaining Agreement (CCNL), where relevant, and our internal compensation policies.
