Serco is seeking to fill a fast-paced, growing, and dynamic role of a highly skilled and experienced Senior Network Architect/Engineer to join our team. This critical role requires deep expertise in designing, deploying, operating, and troubleshooting complex enterprise network infrastructures across various system boundaries. Furthermore, you will be instrumental in establishing and managing robust network deployment environments crucial for validating configurations, ensuring network reliability during upgrades, and verifying the effectiveness of new security measures or applications before they go live.
The ideal candidate possesses strong leadership potential, advanced technical knowledge across various networking technologies, especially with Cisco devices with proven track record in successful deployment projects, and experience building scalable and repeatable test labs. This position is pivotal in ensuring our network remains secure, resilient, high-performing, and adaptable to evolving business needs.
As a Senior Network Architect/Engineer, you will:
- Lead or contribute significantly to the design of enterprise-scale networks (core, distribution, access layers), considering redundancy, security, scalability, performance, and cost-effectiveness. Networks will be a mix of on-prem, enterprise data centers, and cloud-based environments.
- Develop network architectures for new projects, sites and technologies upgrades, and expansion programs.
- Adapt network designs as needed to interface with networks of other systems while ensuring overall network performance.
- Ensure alignment with business requirements, IT strategy, and regulatory compliance.
- Lead complex network deployments (new site builds, data center migrations, major infrastructure changes) from inception to completion following established methodologies (e.g., Change Management).
- Develop and implement detailed deployment plans including timelines, resource allocation, rollback strategies, and contingency planning.
- Adapt network interface designs for site and/or interface specific needs and updating necessary documentation.
- Troubleshoot and resolve intricate network issues during pre-deployment testing and post-deployment validation phases.
- Oversee the configuration, integration, and testing of hardware (routers, switches, firewalls) and software components (OSs, routing protocols, security policies).
- Design, build, maintain, and continuously improve network testing environments (labs) to accurately simulate production networks.
- Utilize appropriate tools for comprehensive validation of network configurations, security policies (pen testing environments), performance benchmarks, and failure scenarios.
- Assist the CyberSecurity team with evaluating security controls related to network architecture and performance.
- Ensure test labs are available for various teams: Network Engineers (new config/upgrade checks), Security Teams (vulnerability scanning, penetration testing), Application Teams (application compatibility testing).
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- Bachelors degree in a related field.
- 10 years of relevant experience including experience designing/architecting networks.
- An active DoD Secret security clearance.
- IAT level 1 Certification.
- Expert-level understanding of TCP/IP stack (IPv4/IPv6), BGP, OSPF, EIGRP routing protocols.
- Experience configuring and troubleshooting Cisco routers, switches, firewalls (especially ISR, ASR platforms; Catalyst series; ASA/Firepower).
- Strong experience with network address translation (NAT/PAT) and firewall technologies.
- Understanding of VLANs, STP variants (RSTP/MSTP), MSTP, VRRP/HSRP/NSHARP, BFD for fast convergence.
- Experience with network hardware vendors beyond Cisco (e.g., Juniper, Arista, Fortinet).
- Familiarity with network security concepts and tools (IPS, Firewalls, VPNs).
- Strong experience in setting up, managing, and using complex network test labs.
- Ability to travel 25%, CONUS and OCONUS.
Additional desired experience:
- Master's degree.
- Network+ or Security+ certification.
- Understanding of data center technologies like EVPN/VXLAN or traditional VLANs.
- Familiarity with VMWare and similar products. Familiarity with Nutanix.
- Highly analytical, meticulous, and detail-oriented.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal – must be able to articulate complex technical problems clearly.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure, meet tight deadlines, and handle ambiguity.
- Willingness to mentor junior engineers and lead network teams.
- Proven success working with a geographically separated team.
