Job Description Summary
The Office of the Provost invites nominations and/or applications for the position of Dean of the Graduate School. This is a full-time, unclassified position to begin as soon as practical.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Reporting to the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Dean of the Graduate School will provide dynamic leadership for graduate education at Miami University and be an advocate for the role and importance of graduate education both within the university and with external audiences.

The Dean leads and directs all core functions of the Graduate School, including administrative operations, planning, policy, program development, marketing, and student admissions and student recruitment, as well as works collaboratively with the provost, other deans, and departments to advance, promote, and support academic excellence in graduate education at Miami University.

Specific responsibilities include:

- Develops, implements and administers the policies and procedures of the Graduate School, including, recruitment, admissions, enrollment, monitoring and recording of academic progress and milestones, and the awarding of degrees.
- Develops and articulates a university-wide vision and strategic plan for graduate education.
- Evaluates the portfolio of graduate programs and recommend investments, restructuring, consolidation, or discontinuation when appropriate.
- Assists individual programs and departments with strengthening their graduate programs in ways that are consistent with the mission of the university and responsive to emerging intellectual areas.
- Collaborates with academic deans and other institutional leaders.
- Works with faculty to develop innovative and relevant curricular degree and non-degree granting programs.
- Supervises Graduate School staff; currently 3 direct reports.
- Serves as Chair of Graduate Council.
- Serves as the university’s representative on the ODHE Chancellor’s Council of Graduate Studies.
- Conducts other duties as assigned by the Provost.

Minimum Qualifications:

- Terminal doctoral degree in a relevant discipline at Miami University.
- 5+ years of administrative experience in higher education (associate dean, department chair) preferably at the graduate level, or equivalent.
- A distinguished record of research or creative work, teaching, and service consistent with the rank of associate or full professor with tenure.
- Demonstrated leadership experience at the department, college, and/or university level including fiscal management.

Preferred Qualifications:

- Experience at an R1 institution.
