About this role

Job Title: Mechanical Engineer (HVAC, Plumbing & Fire Protection) Job Description This role is ideal for a mechanical engineer with 35 years of experience who is passionate about complex building systems and highperformance environments. You will design and coordinate HVAC, plumbing, and fire protection systems for a diverse portfolio of projects, including aerospace, high tech, data centers, higher education, industrial, and healthcare facilities. The position offers the opportunity to work on technically advanced, noncookiecutter projects, contribute to innovative solutions, and grow into project management or principallevel responsibilities while remaining closely involved with design. Responsibilities

- Design and engineer HVAC, plumbing, and fire protection systems for commercial, industrial, and specialized facilities such as aerospace, high tech, data centers, higher education, industrial, and healthcare projects.
- Develop mechanical engineering drawings and documentation using tools such as Revit, CAD, and Bluebeam to ensure accurate, coordinated construction documents.
- Participate in the design of complex environments, including clean rooms, environmental chambers, launch test facilities, and manufacturing spaces, addressing unique engineering challenges.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including mechanical, plumbing, and electrical engineers, to deliver integrated building systems that meet project performance, safety, and regulatory requirements.
- Coordinate closely with project teams to maintain continuity of staffing across projects, building strong working relationships and deep familiarity with project goals and constraints.
- Engage in client coordination and interface activities, attending meetings, asking clarifying questions, and proactively managing expectations throughout the project lifecycle.
- Support or lead project teams depending on project size, including mentoring and coaching junior staff on technical tasks, processes, and best practices.
- Contribute to project planning, scheduling, and task management, ensuring work is completed on time, within scope, and in alignment with quality standards.
- Identify and resolve design issues, propose innovative solutions, and continuously improve engineering processes and methodologies.
- Demonstrate accountability for assigned work, taking ownership of deliverables and maintaining high standards of accuracy, completeness, and professionalism.
- Communicate proactively with colleagues and clients, providing updates on progress, potential issues, and proposed resolutions.
- Work collaboratively as a team player, participating in a culture where the team wins and loses together and supports one another to meet project demands.
- Maintain a positive and professional attitude, even when facing challenging project conditions or difficult client feedback, and help foster a constructive team environment.
- Uphold high performance expectations by consistently pulling your weight, contributing ideas, and staying engaged with complex, challenging projects.
- Pursue professional growth opportunities, including developing skills to become a project manager or principal, or deepening expertise as a designfocused engineer.

Essential Skills

- 35 years of mechanical engineering experience focused on HVAC, plumbing, and fire protection systems.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or Engineer in Training (EIT) certification required.
- Handson experience with mechanical engineering design in commercial or industrial construction environments, such as power or manufacturing facilities.
- Proficiency with Revit for mechanical systems modeling and coordination.
- Experience using CAD software to produce and modify mechanical drawings.
- Familiarity with Bluebeam for reviewing, marking up, and collaborating on design documents.
- Strong understanding of building mechanical systems, including HVAC load calculations, equipment selection, and system layout.
- Ability to work effectively on complex, nonstandard projects that require creative problem solving and highlevel engineering judgment.
- Demonstrated experience coordinating with clients and project teams, including participation in meetings and interface activities.
- Ability to lead or support project teams, depending on project size, and provide guidance to other staff.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to ask insightful questions, clarify requirements, and present engineering concepts clearly.
- Proven ability to work collaboratively as part of a highperforming team and contribute to a supportive, teamoriented culture.
- Strong sense of accountability and ownership over work, with a commitment to meeting client expectations and project deadlines.
- Positive, resilient attitude that helps navigate challenging project situations and fosters constructive teamwork.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

- Experience with HVAC, plumbing, and fire protection design for specialized facilities such as aerospace, high tech, data centers, higher education, industrial, and healthcare is preferred.
- Background in mechanical engineering for power or manufacturing facilities is highly valued.
- Experience working on environmental chambers, launch test facilities, manufacturing facilities, and clean rooms is a plus.
- Interest in highlevel engineering challenges and noncookiecutter projects where unique technical problems arise.
- Desire to grow into project management or principallevel roles, or to advance as a senior design engineer, depending on personal career goals.
- Ability to mentor and coach junior engineers, fostering their technical and professional development.
- Comfort working in front of clients, participating in meetings, and representing the engineering team with professionalism.
- Strong teamwork orientation, similar to team sports, with a willingness to collaborate rather than work in isolation.
- Commitment to being proactive, innovative in process and methods, and supportive of continuous improvement within the team.
- Alignment with a culture that places high importance on personality, collaboration, and cultural fit, with strong references supporting these attributes.

Work Environment You will work in a smaller, highperforming engineering office that delivers complex projects across healthcare, education, government, science and technology, and commercial sectors. Typical projects include facilities for leading aerospace and technology organizations, as well as data centers, higher education campuses, industrial plants, and healthcare environments. The office currently has around 27 employees, with a mix of mechanical, plumbing, and electrical engineers. The team structure is flexible; principals and leaders assign people to projects based on fit and keep teams together throughout the life of a project to maintain continuity and strong collaboration. The environment has a familylike feel where everyone knows each other, supports one another, and is invested in collective success. High performance and accountability are core values, and engineers are expected to contribute actively rather than remain isolated. The culture emphasizes teamwork, proactive communication, innovation in processes, and mutual support, including flexibility when team members have personal commitments such as medical appointments. You will use tools such as Revit, CAD, and Bluebeam in a setting that values complex, challenging work, shared responsibility, and the opportunity to grow your career path, whether toward project management, principallevel leadership, or advanced design roles. Dress code expectations align with a professional engineering office environment, suitable for both inoffice collaboration and clientfacing meetings.
