Job Title: Medical Assistant Job Description
The Medical Assistant plays a key role in ensuring a smooth and welcoming patient experience in a busy healthcare office. This position focuses on greeting and checking in patients, managing scheduling and phone communications, verifying insurance details, and supporting both front desk and clinical workflows. You will help coordinate patient flow in a fast-paced environment, maintain accurate records in the electronic medical record (EMR) system, and provide exceptional customer service while working as part of a close-knit, supportive team.
Responsibilities
- Greet and check in patients in a professional, friendly, and patient-focused manner.
- Schedule patient appointments and manage inbound and outbound phone calls.
- Verify insurance coverage, eligibility, and accepted insurance plans for each patient.
- Explain copays and payment expectations clearly at check-in.
- Support Patient Service Representative (PSR) functions during slower patient periods.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient information within the EMR system.
- Coordinate patient flow in a fast-paced healthcare environment to minimize wait times.
- Provide excellent customer service while handling high patient volumes.
- Collaborate with front desk staff to support approximately 100 patients daily.
- Navigate scheduling demands of 20+ appointments per day and up to 80 patient interactions per shift.
- Multitask effectively while balancing administrative and patient-facing duties.
- Distribute CDs containing images and scans to patients once their appointment is completed.
- Sort and distribute inbound faxes in a timely and organized manner.
- Room patients and collect vital signs as required.
Essential Skills
- High school diploma or GED.
- Experience in a medical role such as medical receptionist, medical assistant, surgical scheduler, or patient service representative.
- Knowledge of medical terminology and medical scheduling processes.
- Experience with medical assisting tasks, including rooming patients and collecting vitals.
- Ability to work with electronic medical record (EMR) systems.
- Strong customer service skills in a healthcare setting.
- Knowledge of insurance verification, insurance plans, and healthcare administration.
- Ability to multitask and remain organized in a busy medical office environment.
- Strong interpersonal skills with a warm, approachable, and non-confrontational demeanor.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Prior front desk experience in a healthcare setting, in any specialty.
- Comfort collaborating with a front desk and clinical team to support high patient volumes.
- Ability to handle approximately 100 patients daily and manage 20+ appointments per day.
- Dependable work style with a strong sense of initiative.
- Ability to work independently while remaining an active and supportive member of the team.
Work Environment
This role is based in a busy yet well-organized medical office with a positive, team-oriented culture. The standard schedule is Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., with participation in a weekend rotation approximately every fifth or sixth Saturday. You will work alongside four other team members, including a lead, in a friendly, close-knit environment where colleagues genuinely enjoy working together. The office culture is supportive and engaging, with birthday celebrations, office decorations, and strong team morale. Team members are trusted to do their jobs without micromanagement and are encouraged to take initiative and work independently while collaborating closely with others. The environment involves frequent use of EMR systems, phones, fax machines, and standard office and clinical equipment in a fast-paced but manageable setting.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Wayne, NJ.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $26.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
