About the Department
As one of the first schools of social work in the United States, the Crown Family School of Social Work, Policy, and Practice has shaped the field for more than 100 years. As part of the University of Chicago, the Crown Family School shares the University's core values and distinctive intellectual culture. Crown Family School faculty, staff, and students focus on identifying solutions to complex social problems through research, training, and direct community engagement. More than 10,000 Crown Family School graduates in the US and globally hold leadership positions in academia, at nonprofits, in business, and at governmental agencies. The Crown Family School is the home of three academic centers. These include the Susan and Richard Kiphart Center for Global Health and Social Development, the Kersten Institute for Urban Education, and the Center for Climate, Health, and Society (CHAS). Graduate Program in Health Administration and Policy (GPHAP) is housed in the Crown Family School of Social Work, Policy, and Practice and has assembled a rich and diverse set of intellectual resources from across the university for students who are looking to make an impact in the health care field. The next generation of health care leaders will require not only a diverse skill set and an entrepreneurial spirit, but deep interdisciplinary training in health care systems and health equity—the kind of world-renowned training offered at the University of Chicago—in order to tackle the health care policy, program and management issues of today.
GPHAP was founded in 1934 and is unique among health programs in the United States in recognizing this and draws students out of silos to connect and blend their expertise to solve the complex problems of our time. GPHAP enables students to earn either a Certificate in Health Administration and Policy or a Certificate in Health Administration and Policy with a Concentration in Global Health, while earning a degree in one of the participating graduate schools on campus: The Booth School of Business, the Harris School of Public Policy, The Law School, the Pritzker School of Medicine, and the Crown Family School of Social Work, Policy, and Practice.
