JOB SUMMARY

We are seeking a Ophthalmic Assistant, Certified to provide clinical and technical support to ophthalmologists and eye care providers by performing ophthalmic testing, assisting with patient examinations, and supporting efficient clinic operations. Delivers high-quality patient care while maintaining compliance with Duke Health, regulatory, and patient safety standards.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

- Perform preliminary ophthalmic examinations including visual acuity, patient history, tonometry, lensometry, pupil assessment, motility testing, visual fields, color vision testing, and other diagnostic procedures as directed.
- Assist providers with patient evaluation, treatment, and diagnostic testing in a fast-paced ophthalmology clinic.
- Administer ophthalmic medications, including dilating and anesthetic drops, according to physician orders and departmental policies.
- Utilize slit lamp biomicroscopy to observe and document variations from normal ocular findings.
- Educate patients on ophthalmic procedures, testing, medications, and contact lens insertion and removal as appropriate.
- Accurately document patient information, testing results, and clinical findings in the electronic medical record.
- Maintain exam rooms, procedure rooms, and clinical work areas to ensure cleanliness, organization, and readiness for patient care.
- Monitor, stock, and order medical and office supplies as needed to support clinic operations.
- Support instrument processing, sterilization workflows, and equipment maintenance in accordance with infection prevention standards.
- Assist with scheduling, telephone triage, message management, prescription refill requests, and other clerical responsibilities as assigned.
- Demonstrate professionalism and exceptional customer service when interacting with patients, families, providers, and team members.
- Maintain confidentiality and comply with all Duke Health, HIPAA, Joint Commission, and regulatory requirements.
- Participate in ongoing competency validation, continuing education, and professional development activities.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support departmental and organizational needs.

JOB ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

- Work requires an education background generally equivalent to a high school education.
- Work requires 1 year of directly related experience in Ophthalmology or Optometry; OR, graduation from an accredited Ophthalmic Technician program.
- Work requires certification as a certified Ophthalmic Assistant by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO).
- Must have BLS Certification.

JOB HOURS

The schedule for this position is day shifts, Monday-Friday, with no weekends or holidays.
