Your role
Radio-Canada Toronto is looking for an enthusiastic senior writer to join its Economic Bureau. This is a temporary position until mid-September 2027.
The successful candidate will identify and produce original stories related to the economy, innovation, and consumer trends. They will present their content across all Radio-Canada platforms, with priority given to digital formats.
They will possess strong journalistic skills, tact, and solid experience writing digital news. The selected candidate must know how to create and organize digital news content and enrich texts with multimedia elements to increase their value to the audience.
The chosen candidate will also report and explain news stories concerning, for instance, commercial trade or the impact of changes to the Bank of Canada key interest rate, sometimes under tight deadlines.
The work is performed under the direction of a senior producer or assignment editor, but you are expected to show initiative and judgment. You will also be asked to edit the work of others.
Main tasks:
- Find stories of interest to a broad audience.
- Gather information from various sources and report it in text, video, or audio format across all our platforms, prioritizing digital.
- Write, edit, assemble, and publish content related to economics, business, innovation and consumer trends in a clear and concise manner for regional and national audiences, prioritizing digital formats.
- Rewrite texts as needed to better align with the platform format.
- Ensure that all texts adhere to standard grammar rules and Radio-Canada site style, including proper spelling and capitalization.
- Prepare and draft digital alerts.
- Select photos and audio/video clips to accompany published reports.
- Critically review content and items produced by others and suggest changes while showing tact and respect.
- Prepare and write articles and headlines from information provided by reporters, news wires, CBC, or original sources.
- Edit audio and video content to produce reports within deadlines.
This role requires full-time on-site presence.
Your profile:
- University degree or equivalent.
- Three (3) to five (5) years of experience directly related to the position, including proven knowledge of online and digital news media.
- Extensive and evident knowledge of Ontario current affairs, major economic issues, and the business world, as well as a strong interest in consumer trends and innovation topics.
- Sound editorial judgment to evaluate information and ability to work effectively under pressure in a newsroom with tight deadlines.
- Ability to write a wide range of material related to news and current events.
- Experience and proven ability to write/edit following best practices and style for digital platforms.
- Ability to select and prepare photos and videos to enrich reports.
- Experience identifying potential legal issues and journalistic policy violations in digital content.
- Ability to determine news value for online audiences.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills; excellent team player.
- Strong commitment to embodying and promoting diversity, inclusion, and respect in the workplace.
- Ability to develop original, initiative-driven journalism.
- Skills in mathematics and data analysis are an asset.
- A valid driver's license and driving record meeting CBC/Radio-Canada's insurer minimum requirements is an important asset.
- Ability to work various shifts, including early mornings, late evenings, and weekends.
- Knowledge of audio and video editing software is an asset.
- Excellent command of French and very good knowledge of English is an asset.
