About this role

The Tooling, Process & Training team makes our service technicians faster, safer, and more effective in the field. As a Mechanical Engineer on the Residential Efficiency workstream, you will find the biggest sources of wasted time, repeat visits, and cost in residential service and installation work, and then drive them out.

You will go on field visits to see the problems first-hand, turn what you see into clear business cases, and lead cross-functional teams from idea generation through to a solution in the field. That solution might be a new tool, a better process, a software or diagnostic improvement, or new training. You will work closely with field technicians, service leadership, engineering, and software teams. You will also use modern AI tools to speed up analysis and problem solving.

- Ride along with technicians on residential service and install jobs. Observe the work, break it into steps, and find where time, quality, and cost are lost
- Measure each problem's impact (labor hours, repeat visits, truck rolls, parts cost, customer experience) using field data, service records, and time studies. Rank opportunities by return on investment and present clear recommendations to leadership
- Plan and run structured brainstorming and root-cause sessions (for example 5 Whys, fishbone diagrams, FMEA) with technicians, engineers, and stakeholders. Narrow ideas down to solutions you can act on and test
- Dig into issues that span mechanical, electrical, firmware, and software systems. Separate root causes from symptoms and work with engineering teams to fix them
- Turn process improvements into clear procedures and training content so every technician can adopt the change consistently

- Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience
- Hands-on ability to troubleshoot both hardware (mechanical and electromechanical systems) and software (reading logs, isolating faults, understanding how firmware and apps interact with hardware)
- Experience using AI models and tools (such as ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot, or similar) to solve engineering or business problems, and good judgment about where they help and where they don't
- Basic understanding of software engineering: comfortable reading and writing simple scripts (Python preferred), working with data, and talking with software teams about requirements, APIs, and bugs
- Ability to build a business case: estimate costs, savings, and payback, and present them clearly to technical and non-technical audiences
- Familiarity with residential energy systems (solar, batteries, inverters, EV chargers) or similar electrical equipment
- Experience building simple automations or AI-assisted workflows (for example, prompt-based tools, scripts, or agents)
