The Opportunity

Provides support to the Enterprise by delivering reliable technology solutions for a business-critical P&C Auto policy administration platform. Engaged throughout the software systems and application development lifecycle, with an emphasis on Java and Spring Boot development, production troubleshooting, system stability, observability, resilience, refactoring, and performance optimization within a containerized OpenShift and Kubernetes environment.

We offer a flexible work environment that requires an individual to be in the office 4 days per week. This position can be based in one of the following locations: San Antonio, TX, Plano, TX. Relocation assistance is not available for this position.

What you'll do:

- Bachelor's degree; OR 4 years of relevant education and/or experience.
- Design, develop, code, test, and maintain complex Java applications and REST APIs supporting Auto policy administration, acquisition, servicing, and document processing.
- Investigate and resolve complex application, integration, and production issues by troubleshooting end-to-end solutions across Java, OpenShift, Kubernetes, and connected systems.
- Improve system reliability and resilience by identifying failure points, reducing operational risk, limiting incident blast radius, and addressing recurring production issues.
- Identify system performance issues and technical debt, then refactor and optimize existing solutions to improve stability, scalability, and supportability.
- Develop and enhance application observability through logging, monitoring, custom dashboards, metrics, and alerting using tools such as Kibana and Datadog.
- Lead code and design reviews, communicate technical updates to stakeholders, and support accurate planning and reliable daily operations.
- Mentor engineers on application development, production support, troubleshooting, secure coding, and system maintenance practices.
- Identify opportunities to improve engineering and operational processes through automation, DevOps, Site Reliability Engineering, and AI-assisted capabilities.
- Ensures risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures.

What you have:

- Bachelor's degree; OR 4 years of relevant education and/or experience.
- 6 years of software development experience demonstrating technical depth in Java, Spring Boot, REST APIs, or similar enterprise application technologies.
- 4 years of experience delivering technology solutions across all phases of the software systems and application development lifecycle, including leading code or design reviews.
- Experience developing and supporting containerized services using Docker, Kubernetes, and OpenShift.
- Demonstrated experience troubleshooting complex production applications, performing root-cause analysis, and resolving issues across integrated systems.
- Experience refactoring and optimizing existing applications to improve performance, resilience, security, and operational stability.
- Experience with event-driven architecture or messaging technologies such as Kafka.
- Experience improving application observability through logging, monitoring, dashboards, and alerting using Kibana, Datadog, or similar tools.
- Strong knowledge of secure coding practices and the ability to communicate technical challenges, risks, and solutions to technical and nontechnical stakeholders.

What sets you apart:

- Experience supporting applications that integrate with mainframe or other legacy technologies.

- Experience applying DevOps or Site Reliability Engineering practices to business-critical production applications.

- Experience with AWS technologies and services.

- Experience using automation or AI-assisted tools to improve engineering and production support processes.

Compensation range: The salary range for this position is: $114,080.00 - $218,030.00 .

Compensation: USAA has an effective process for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure we remain competitive. You are paid within the salary range based on your experience and market data of the position. The actual salary for this role may vary by location.

Employees may be eligible for pay incentives based on overall corporate and individual performance and at the discretion of the USAA Board of Directors.
