Northrop Grumman Defense Systems is seeking a Sr. Staff Nuclear Hardness Survivability Engineer to join the Sentinel Systems Engineering Ground Systems team located in Roy, UT. Northrop Grumman supports the Air Force’s sustainment, development, production and deployment of hardware and system modifications for Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) Ground and Airborne Launch Control Systems, Launch Facilities, and associated infrastructure.
What you will get to do:
The successful candidate will join the Nuclear Hardness & Survivability (NH&S) team in Roy, UT to Provide SME level technical oversight to the NH&S team in the area Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) effects, hardening, EMP Test, etc. This position would be the team’s primary technical lead for all EMP related activities, as well as supporting with system requirements thread work. This position will provide both technical direction and of Missile (AVE HEMP qualification) and ground system qualification (MIL-STD-188-125) and design trade studies (LS HEMP trade study)– providing technical leadership to a team of 3-5 engineers and mentorship to a team of 30 engineers.
The candidate will contribute to the successful development of the world’s most advanced weapon system in one or more of the following ways:
- Defining NH&S environments and requirements
- Coordinate some of the largest scale EMP tests ever performed
- Effects of electromagnetic pulses on electronics
- NHS qualification testing and analysis of semiconductors
- NHS qualification testing and analysis of the Sentinel systems, subsystems and equipment.
- NHS qualification requirement and EMP Survivability thread support.
Basic Qualifications:
- Degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or other relevant STEM degree.
- Sr Staff Systems Engineer Experience: 14+ years of related work experience with BS. 12+ years of related work experience with Master’s degree, 10 years of related work experience with a PhD.
- Must be a US Citizen with an active DoD Secret Clearance with an investigation date within the last 6 years
- Subject matter expert in MIL-STD-461, MIL-STD-464, MIL-STD-188-125, MIL-STD-2169, MIL-STD-1766C
- Experience with Electromagnetic hardening and system level testing
- Ability to meet program technical, cost, and schedule milestones
- Experience leading EMP design efforts with integrated product teams (IPTs).
- Ability to integrate, engage, and lead an EMP hardening team of 3-5 engineers.
- Ability to interface with the customer and to present EMP design recommendations to IPT leads, program boards, and customers.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior experience performing EMP design work on a missile program.
- Prior experience performing EMP design work on fixed ground installations.
- Prior experience performing EMP simulations of HEMP and SREMP
- ICBM Experience
- 5+ years experience leading technical teams in support of program execution to meet cost and schedule.
- Technical areas include Space and Launch Vehicles and associated Ground Control Systems.
- Experience in modeling of EM effects and use of EM effects simulation tools such as Spice, MATLAB, ANSYS HFSS/EMA3D/Maxwell, CST, or other codes.

This position’s standard work schedule is 9/80. The 9/80 schedule allows employees who work a nine-hour day Monday through Thursday to take every other Friday off.

Primary Level Salary Range: $166,500.00 - $249,700.00
The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.
Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
