A Brief Overview
Working independently, this team member is primarily responsible for veterinary procedures, training, stakeholder collaboration, compliance, and supervision. This role plays a vital role in the day-to-day veterinary operations for Department of Veterinary Resources (DVR).

Responsible for the oversight of the animal care and use program involving research animals enrolled in Resuscitation Science Center's groundbreaking translational research. This veterinarian will work closely with CHOP Department of Veterinary Resources and the IACUC to ensure adequate veterinary care and regulatory compliance with CHOP internal policies as well as federal and state regulations governing the use of animals in research. This individual will also serve as a subject matter expert on animal model development including optimization of existing, and development of novel, complex, animal models supporting research including but not limited to protocols for cardiac arrest, traumatic brain injury, and extracorporeal life support.

What you will do

1. Procedures

- Understands, follows, and carries out all SOPs, quality assurance standards, safety procedures, and documentation requirements for related activities
- Oversee quarantine including review of health reports from incoming shipments
- Act as the point of contact for clinical concerns arising in animals enrolled on studies at the Resuscitation Science Center and consult with DVR veterinarians to develop treatment plans.
- Collaborate with the CHOP IACUC to create animal models that consider appropriate anesthetics, analgesics, and clearly define humane endpoints.
- Make recommendations for animal model refinement and troubleshoot with researchers and support staff when there are technical or clinical issues with new or established animal models.

2. Training

- Develop training programs, manuals, materials, presentations
- Provide hands on training for the staff and researchers (as applicable) including lab animal handling, restraint, dosing, etc.
- Supervise personnel to ensure work meets expectations
- Work with lab managers to optimize the training program (where applicable) to enhance research model outcomes, the animal experience, and promote experimental reproducibility.

3. Collaboration

- Consult on protocol development and grant design with CHOP researchers and external sponsors.
- Supervise activities and provide recommendations
- Act as a point of contact and subject matter expert on lab animal biology, translatability, and animal model development.

4. Ensure regulatory compliance

- Review, implement, improve & assist in audits of records, procedures & protocols
- Develop tools to assist staff and investigators in compliance-related activities
- Ensure appropriate procedure documentation and study/IACUC protocol compliance through record audits and procedural observations, and implement process improvements, where required, to support regulatory compliance.
- Interface with the IACUC to update, modify, or author new animal care and use protocols to ensure all experiments and procedures are compliant.
- Serve as a liaison to the CHOP IACUC and participate in IACUC meetings

5. Supervise supporting staff

- Ensure staff is performing job duties and have resources needed
- Provide performance feedback and review
- Encourage staff development opportunities • Participate in new employee recruitment, interviews and hiring decisions; onboard and train new hires
- Coordinate staff to ensure protocol support can be provided when requested
- Provide guidance on animal care and use as well as process improvements.
- Ensure that the center is operating under the highest animal welfare standards through staff training, support, and resource allocation.

Other responsibilities as required.

- May be asked to be on-call / rotation and provide services after regular business hours, weekends, and holidays
- Will be part of the Resuscitation Science Center’s Leadership Team

Education Qualifications

- Doctorate Veterinary Medicine Required

Experience Qualifications

- At least five (5) years of veterinarian experience Required
- At least seven (7) years of veterinarian experience in a laboratory animal setting Preferred
- At least three (3) years of leadership, management or supervisory experience Preferred
- At least four (4) years of surgical/anesthesia experience with large animals Preferred GLP and preclinical model development experience Preferred

Licenses and Certifications

- Licensed Veterinarian Authorized State Board of Veterinary Medicine upon hire Required
- Licensed Veterinarian Pennsylvania State Licensing Board within 12 months Preferre

SALARY RANGE:

$129,700.00 - $171,900.00 Annually

Salary ranges are shown for full-time jobs. If you're working part-time, your pay will be adjusted accordingly.
