Position Details:

Position Summary:

The Hospital Chaplain provides spiritual, emotional, and pastoral support to patients, families, and coworkers during times of illness, crisis, loss, and stress. As a member of the interdisciplinary care team, the Chaplain ministers to people of all faith traditions and belief systems while supporting Mercy's mission, values, and service standards.

Key Responsibilities

- Assess and respond to the spiritual and emotional needs of patients, families, and coworkers.
- Provide support during crisis situations, serious illness, trauma, and end-of-life care.
- Collaborate with physicians, nurses, social workers, and other care team members.
- Assist visiting clergy and connect patients with spiritual resources as needed.
- Document pastoral care services and maintain confidentiality.
- Foster an environment of compassion, dignity, religious freedom, and respect for all beliefs.
- Participate in departmental initiatives, quality improvement efforts, and ongoing professional development.

Qualifications:

Required:

- Bachelor's degree in Theology, Ministry, Divinity, or related field; or equivalent education and experience.
- One unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) or equivalent experience (completion required within one year of hire if hired under the equivalency provision).
- Experience providing pastoral care or visiting the sick in a ministry setting.
- Endorsed or eligible for endorsement by a recognized faith community.

Preferred:

- Graduate-level coursework in Theology, Ministry, Counseling, Divinity, or related field.
- Two or more units of CPE.
- Healthcare or military chaplaincy experience.
