Position Summary
Worley is seeking a highly experienced Process Engineering Subject Matter Expert (SME) in fluorine gas production via molten fluoride salt electrochemistry and industrial KF/HF electrolysis systems. Also seeking SME-level and/or relevant experience in wet hydrofluorination reactors and dry fluorination fluidized bed reactors in the conversion of yellowcake to UF6.
The successful candidate will provide technical leadership for the design, development, commissioning, troubleshooting, and optimization of fluoride-salt electrochemical processes supporting advanced chemical, nuclear, and fuel-cycle applications.
The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience designing, operating, troubleshooting, or commissioning industrial fluoride electrolysis systems. Experience in fluorine production, fluorochemical processing, uranium conversion, fuel-cycle facilities, specialty chemical manufacturing, molten salt reactor technologies, or other advanced electrochemical processes is highly desirable.
The candidate will be capable of providing strategic technical leadership while supporting detailed engineering, project delivery, and execution activities.
The SME provides recognized expertise in molten fluoride electrochemical systems and supports project execution, technology development, client engagement, safety reviews, and business development activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the technical SME for molten fluoride salt electrochemistry and high-temperature electrochemical processes.
- Lead process design and technology development associated with KF/HF electrolysis systems and fluorine generation facilities.
- Support process design and technology development associated with wet hydrofluorination and dry fluorination processes for the conversion of yellowcake to UF6.
- Develop process design bases, PFDs, P&IDs, equipment specifications, control philosophies, and operating strategies.
- Support scale-up from laboratory and pilot-scale systems through commercial implementation.
- Provide expertise in electrolyzer cell design, electrode selection, current distribution, heat management, electrolyte chemistry, and process performance optimization.
- Support process safety activities including HAZOPs, PHAs, LOPA studies, operating hazard reviews, and commissioning readiness reviews.
- E valuate and specify materials of construction for fluorine service, anhydrous HF, KF/HF electrolytes, molten fluoride salts, and other highly corrosive environments.
- Interface directly with clients as a Subject Matter Expert and provide technical support for business development and proposal activities.
- Mentor and develop junior and intermediate process engineers.
Qualifications
Required
- Master's degree in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Electrochemical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or related discipline.
- Minimum 8 years of relevant industrial experience.
- Demonstrated expertise in molten salt electrochemistry or industrial electrolysis technologies.
- Significant experience with fluoride-salt systems, fluorine production, related electrochemical operations, and/or hydrofluorination/fluorination to UF6.
- Experience with process design and operation of electrochemical cells and associated balance-of-plant systems.
- Strong understanding of electrochemical fundamentals, including:
Electrode kinetics
- Current efficiency
- Mass transfer
- Cell voltage optimization
- Electrolyte management
- Electrochemical corrosion mechanisms
- Experience with highly corrosive chemical service and materials selection.
- Ability to function as a client-facing technical SME.
Preferred
- Direct experience with KF/HF electrolysis and fluorine generation systems.
- Experience with fluorine, anhydrous HF, UF6, uranium conversion, enrichment, or other nuclear fuel-cycle processes.
- Experience with molten fluoride salts such as FLiNaK, FLiBe, or similar systems.
- Experience supporting the commissioning, startup, and operation of electrochemical processing facilities.
- Experience specifying rectifiers, high-current DC power systems, gas handling systems, off-gas treatment systems, and fluorine containment systems.
- Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in a relevant technical discipline.
- PE license or equivalent professional credentials.
