The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high-quality drinking water, managing wastewater and storm water, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system’s 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City.
The Bureau of Customer Services (BCS) oversees the production and collection of water and wastewater bills along with all the work required to maintain our citywide network of meters and meter reading devices. Bureau of Customer Services serves approximately 836,000 customers and collects more than $4 billion in revenue each year.
Bureau of Customer Services is seeking to hire five Associate Water Use Inspectors, Level II in the following units: Technical Services, Meter Test Facility, Queens, and Bronx.
Under direction of the Chief Inspector, the Associate Water Use Inspector 2 will:
- Direct one or more moderate-sized Borough-wide Water Use Inspection Programs by assigning, supervising, counseling and evaluating the work of inspectors of lower rank;
- Support the development and delivery of training programs for Inspectors;
- Review service orders, both virtually and in the field, to identify deficiencies or approve the work, including issuing IWNs (Warning Notice), NOVs (Notice of Violation), or creating service orders/cases in UMAX (Customer Information Billing System) as needed
- Review permit applications, review and dispatch Hansen (311 complaints) tasks, and evaluate billing interference conditions as required.
- Coordinate with the Chief and other managers to create and execute service orders.
- Support the Chief with regards to key account inspections and complicated metering situations.
- Report to field to resolve any customer disputes or complaints.
- Interpret and enforce the rules and regulations of the Department.
- Review, evaluate, and advise on any submissions pertaining to the sale and use of water.
- Prepare and review reports and, when required, makes special inspections.
- Directs follow-up inspections where warnings and violations have been issued based on management information service reports.
- Learn and enforce any Agency EH&S (Environmental, Health and Safety) and EEO (Equal Employment Opportunity) policies.
- Assist in the planning of inspection programs based on data processing reports and management information service projections.
- Temporarily serve as Chief Inspector
- Drive a motor vehicle.
- Coordinates summons and violation submission to the Environmental Control Board, including personnel required to appear before the Board.
- Review cases to be submitted to the Environmental Control Board and assists at hearings, including giving testimony.
- Provide technical assistance to the Administrative Law Judge of the Environmental Control Board.
Physical/Environmental Factors:
Climbing ladders, pits, confined spaces, lift heavy items, standing for prolonged times, all weather conditions, kneeling.

Qualifications:
1. Three years of satisfactory full-time mechanical experience in plumbing or in water use inspection, one year of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity; or
2. Education and/or experience equivalent to "1" above.
