We are searching for a Manager, Laboratory Systems & Data Platforms, located at an approved DePuy Synthes site or remote where permitted. The position may require up to 10% travel based on project, deployment, or laboratory support needs.
Purpose:
We are seeking an experienced product and applications leader to join our R&D Applications and Master Data team. In this role, you will lead the business ownership, strategy, governance, roadmap, deployment, adoption, and lifecycle management of laboratory systems and scientific data platforms across DePuy Synthes R&D.
You will serve as the primary R&D business lead for laboratory technologies, including electronic laboratory notebooks (ELN), laboratory information management systems (LIMS), data integrity monitoring applications, scientific data storage platforms, and related digital capabilities. You will translate laboratory and business needs into prioritized requirements, product roadmaps, backlogs, and investment plans.
You will partner closely with R&D laboratory teams, IT, Quality, Information Security & Risk Management, Technology Quality, Supply Chain, and external vendors to deliver secure, scalable, compliant, and sustainable solutions. This role is an opportunity to shape a harmonized laboratory technology and scientific data ecosystem across a global R&D organization.
Job Responsibilities:
Lead Product Strategy and Roadmaps
- Define and maintain the product vision, multi-year roadmap, governance model, and lifecycle strategy for laboratory systems and scientific data platforms.
- Align technology priorities and investment plans with R&D business objectives and laboratory needs.
- Identify opportunities for harmonization, simplification, automation, application rationalization, and AI-enabled capabilities.
Own and Govern Laboratory Applications
- Serve as Business Owner, or provide governance and direction to designated Business Owners, for assigned laboratory applications, including ELN/LIMS, Compliance Builder, and related technologies.
- Own demand intake and prioritization and translate user needs into business requirements, user stories, acceptance criteria, and an actionable product backlog.
- Lead release planning, deployment readiness, demonstrations, adoption planning, training coordination, hypercare, and value realization.
- Execute application sustainment and lifecycle processes, including incident escalation, change control, performance monitoring, feedback cycles, periodic reviews, and lifecycle decisions.
Shape Scientific Data and Master Data Practices
- Develop the scientific data storage strategy, including business requirements and data governance, application selection, storage methodology, access, retention, archival, continuity, and lifecycle management across cloud and on-premises environments.
- Establish and maintain governance for laboratory master data, including ownership, data quality, standards, change processes, and periodic review expectations.
- Partner with IT, solution architecture, infrastructure, cybersecurity, validation, data integrity, and quality teams to define requirements and coordinate delivery.
Lead Delivery, Vendors, and Investment Planning
- Manage product-related budgets, forecasts, timelines, dependencies, risks, vendor commitments, and investment recommendations.
- Coordinate software, data platform, cloud, infrastructure, and professional-service providers and escalate performance or service concerns.
- Track and communicate meaningful product, adoption, service, and value measures, including applicable KPIs and OKRs.
Partner Across the R&D Enterprise
- Build strong partnerships with R&D laboratories, IT, Quality, Manufacturing Quality, Supply Chain, Information Security & Risk Management, Technology Quality, and other functions using shared laboratory technologies.
- Facilitate requirements workshops, roadmap reviews, governance forums, and leadership updates; communicate priorities, progress, value, risks, and decisions clearly.
- Lead business change management, stakeholder engagement, communications, training, and adoption activities for laboratory technology deployments.
- Partner with the R&D Applications & Master Data team and stakeholders to develop a holistic technology roadmap and technology governance process for DePuy Synthes R&D
Act as the primary business escalation and coordination point for laboratory applications, scientific data storage, connectivity, workstation, access, and related technology issues.
- Mentor and train laboratory personnel, Business Owners, product team members, and contractors; may supervise a limited number of direct reports and sponsor contract resources depending on scope.
Quality, Compliance, and Leadership Expectations
- Ensure appropriate consideration of GxP and non-GxP requirements, data integrity, validation, cybersecurity, Good Documentation Practice, and technology risk governance.
- Demonstrate strong initiative, prioritization, analytical thinking, issue resolution, flexibility, and follow-through while managing concurrent responsibilities.
- Follow all Company guidelines related to Health, Safety and Environmental practices, as applicable, and ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Science, Information Technology, Computer Science, Data Science, or a related field with 7 to 9 years of related experience; or a master's degree in a related field with 5 to 7 years of related experience.
- Minimum of 7 years of experience in a regulated industry, enterprise applications, digital products, laboratory systems, or scientific data platforms.
- Experience leading or governing applications, product roadmaps, portfolios, demand, or cross-functional governance across multiple sites or business functions.
- Experience translating business needs into requirements, user stories, acceptance criteria, prioritized backlogs, and delivery plans.
- Experience with application development, deployment, adoption, sustainment, lifecycle management, or continuous improvement.
- Understanding of regulated GxP and non-GxP environments, including data integrity, validation, cybersecurity, quality, and risk-management expectations.
- Experience collaborating with IT delivery teams, Quality partners, vendors, and senior business stakeholders.
- Strong written and verbal communication, analytical thinking, problem solving, facilitation, and influencing skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, make risk-based decisions, and drive alignment without direct authority.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with ELN, LIMS, laboratory informatics, scientific data platforms, or applications such as LabVantage, LabWare, BIOVIA, ComplianceBuilder, or similar technologies.
- Experience with cloud and on-premises data storage, migration, retention, backup, disaster recovery, archival, and data lifecycle practices.
- Experience with Agile product delivery, backlog management, release planning, Jira, and ServiceNow or comparable tools.
- Experience with application portfolio management, vendor management, budget planning, and business-value measurement.
- Experience developing procedures, process maps, training materials, and organizational change or adoption plans.
Johnson & Johnson announced plans to separate our Orthopaedics business to establish a standalone orthopaedics company, operating as DePuy Synthes. The anticipated base pay range for this position is :
$117,000.00 - $201,250.00
Additional Description for Pay Transparency:
Subject to the terms of their respective plans, employees are eligible to participate in the Company’s consolidated retirement plan (pension) and savings plan (401(k)).
This position is eligible to participate in the Company’s long-term incentive program.
Subject to the terms of their respective policies and date of hire, employees are eligible for the following time off benefits:
Vacation –120 hours per calendar year
Sick time - 40 hours per calendar year; for employees who reside in the State of Colorado –48 hours per calendar year; for employees who reside in the State of Washington –56 hours per calendar year
Holiday pay, including Floating Holidays –13 days per calendar year
