Department Overview

The Department of Public Health Sciences at the University of Virginia is seeking a Data Manager to join its research team. The Data Manager will collaborate with research faculty within the Department of Public Health Sciences, as well as investigators across the School of Medicine, in support of multiple clinical and basic science research projects.

Position Summary

The Data Manager will play a key role in designing, developing, maintaining, and troubleshooting research data systems, with a particular focus on REDCap-based projects.

The successful candidate will bring strong problem-solving and analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with multiple research teams. This position will support the development of reliable data processes, reusable code, and efficient data pipelines across a variety of research initiatives.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include:

- Lead the design, development, implementation, and management of research projects in REDCap.
- Design and maintain REDCap reports for faculty and staff use and for internal and external communication.
- Perform data quality checks and identify and resolve data integrity issues.
- Manage, clean, manipulate, and integrate complex datasets from multiple sources.
- Create analytic datasets using SQL, including datasets utilizing the OMOP Common Data Model and Snowflake data platform.
- Collaborate with multiple research teams to develop reusable code and data pipelines that improve analytical efficiency across projects.
- Provide REDCap system training and technical assistance to staff members and external collaborators.
- Troubleshoot REDCap projects and other data-management-related issues.
- Support faculty and research teams with data preparation and management needs throughout the research lifecycle.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:
Bachelor’s degree in computing, data science, statistics, or a related field by the appointment start date.

Experience:

- Minimum of two years of experience developing and supporting REDCap projects.
- Demonstrated proficiency with data cleaning, manipulation, and management using R or SAS.

Preferred Qualifications

- Two or more years of experience managing large datasets and troubleshooting data management systems.
- Experience using SQL, OMOP, and/or Snowflake.
- Experience working with electronic health record data.
- Experience supporting clinical, health sciences, or academic research environments.

Physical Demands

This is primarily a sedentary position involving extensive use of desktop computers. The position may occasionally require walking to attend meetings, programs, or other work-related activities.

Position Type & Work Location

This position is a University Staff position.
