Position Overview:
As an Instrumentation Engineer in our Calgary office, you will provide engineering design, analysis, and technical support for instrumentation and control systems across projects within the energy and infrastructure sectors. You will work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams to develop practical, reliable, and compliant instrumentation solutions, with a strong focus on instrumentation databases, control system integration, and project deliverables. This role requires hands-on experience with Hexagon Smart Plant Instrumentation (SPI), strong technical knowledge, and the ability to coordinate instrumentation activities through the project lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
Instrumentation Engineering & Design
- Develop and review instrumentation engineering deliverables for energy and infrastructure projects.
- Prepare and review instrument specifications, data sheets, instrument indexes, I/O lists, loop diagrams, hook-ups, installation details, and related documentation.
- Develop instrumentation design criteria, philosophies, and technical documentation in accordance with project requirements.
- Support the selection and specification of instruments, control valves, analyzers, and related instrumentation equipment.
- Apply applicable codes, standards, regulations, and client requirements to instrumentation engineering activities.
- Review engineering deliverables for technical accuracy, completeness, constructability, and compliance with project requirements.
Smart Plant Instrumentation & Control Systems
- Develop, maintain, and manage instrumentation data and deliverables using Hexagon SmartPlant Instrumentation (SPI).
- Demonstrate strong working knowledge of SPI workflows, including instrument databases, specifications, indexes, wiring, loop documentation, and related project data.
- Support integration of instrumentation design information with distributed control systems (DCS), programmable logic controllers (PLC), safety instrumented systems (SIS), and other control systems.
- Coordinate control system I/O requirements, instrument signals, control narratives, and related interfaces.
- Review control system documentation and vendor information for consistency with instrumentation design requirements.
- Support configuration, testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting activities as required.
Project & Multidisciplinary Coordination
- Coordinate instrumentation activities with process, electrical, mechanical, piping, civil, structural, and other project disciplines.
- Participate in interdisciplinary design reviews, coordination meetings, and technical discussions.
- Coordinate with vendors, suppliers, contractors, and clients regarding instrumentation and control requirements.
- Identify and resolve design interfaces, technical issues, and inconsistencies.
- Support project schedules, resource planning, estimates, and technical deliverable tracking.
Field & Commissioning Support
- Provide engineering support during construction, commissioning, startup, and field investigations.
- Review contractor and vendor documentation, including instrument installation and wiring information.
- Participate in instrument inspections, loop checks, functional testing, and commissioning activities as required.
- Assist with troubleshooting instrumentation and control system issues.
- Travel to project sites and client locations as required.
Quality & Technical Development
- Follow established engineering, quality assurance, and quality control processes.
- Maintain accurate and organized instrumentation databases and project documentation.
- Support continuous improvement of instrumentation design standards, workflows, and project delivery practices.
- Provide technical guidance and mentoring to less-experienced instrumentation personnel as appropriate.
- Maintain current knowledge of instrumentation, control systems, industry standards, and emerging technologies.
Qualifications & Skills Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Instrumentation Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Control Systems Engineering, or a related engineering discipline from an accredited institution.
- Intermediate level: 4–9 years of relevant instrumentation and controls engineering experience.
- Demonstrated hands-on experience with Hexagon Smart Plant Instrumentation (SPI) is required.
- Experience delivering instrumentation and control systems for energy, oil and gas, power, utilities, industrial, infrastructure, or related projects is preferred.
- Experience working within multidisciplinary engineering and project teams is preferred.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation or eligibility for registration with Engineers and Geoscientists Alberta (APEGA) is preferred.
Technical Skills
- Strong knowledge of instrumentation and control engineering principles, practices, applicable codes, and industry standards.
- Strong working experience with Hexagon Smart Plant Instrumentation (SPI) and instrumentation database management.
- Experience with control systems, including DCS, PLC, SIS, and associated instrumentation interfaces.
- Experience developing and reviewing instrument indexes, data sheets, specifications, I/O lists, loop diagrams, hook-ups, and related deliverables.
- Understanding of control valves, transmitters, analyzers, process instrumentation, and associated installation requirements.
- Familiarity with common instrumentation, control system, engineering, and design software and tools.
- Ability to interpret P&IDs, process documentation, control narratives, vendor documentation, and multidisciplinary engineering drawings.
- Understanding of instrumentation installation, commissioning, testing, and troubleshooting.
