Summary:
The Principal Process Automation & Controls Engineer is responsible for providing control system engineering support for industrial facilities and projects. The role requires an experienced, self-sufficient professional who can work directly with operations, maintenance, and engineering personnel to execute control system improvements, troubleshooting, operational support, and the development of Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) engineering deliverables with minimal supervision.
This position requires advanced hands-on Emerson DeltaV configuration experience. The successful candidate must be capable of independently configuring, modifying, troubleshooting, and supporting DeltaV control systems in operating facilities and project environments.
A key responsibility of this position is the preparation, review, and execution of I&C engineering deliverables throughout the project lifecycle, from concept and detailed design through commissioning and startup.
This role will act as an owner's representative to the client and will be based full-time in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
Responsibilities:
- Lead the development, review, and implementation of Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) engineering deliverables.
- Prepare and maintain engineering documentation including: Control Narratives
- Functional Design Specifications (FDS)
- Cause-and-Effect Matrices
- Instrument Indexes
- I/O Lists
- PLC and DCS Logic Diagrams
- Loop Drawings
- Alarm Philosophy and Rationalization Documentation
- Test Procedures
- Commissioning and Startup Packages
- Configure, maintain, troubleshoot, and optimize Emerson DeltaV control systems.
- Execute control strategy modifications, graphics development, module configuration, alarming changes, and system troubleshooting.
- Support DeltaV system upgrades, migrations, and lifecycle management activities.
- Work directly with operations and maintenance personnel to identify and resolve process control issues.
- Review and interpret existing control programs and system documentation.
- Provide technical leadership for DCS, PLC, SIS, and HMI/SCADA systems.
- Support commissioning, startup, testing, and troubleshooting activities.
- Collaborate with automation, instrumentation, operations, and maintenance teams to improve reliability, performance, and safety.
- Independently prioritize and execute assigned work with minimal direction.
- Travel up to 25% as required to support project execution, commissioning activities, troubleshooting, and business needs throughout North America.
What you will bring:
Technical and Industry Experience:
- Significant industrial controls and automation experience.
- Demonstrated experience supporting operating facilities and industrial projects.
- Extensive hands-on Emerson DeltaV configuration experience is mandatory.
- Demonstrated experience configuring DeltaV control modules, equipment modules, graphics, alarms, historian interfaces, communications, and operator workstations is required.
- Proven experience developing, reviewing, and executing Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) engineering deliverables.

- Experience with integrated DeltaV architectures and system expansion projects.
- Brownfield modifications and operational support.
- Functional safety and alarm management knowledge.
- Knowledge of integrated plant operations and production optimization.
- Experience supporting multi-discipline engineering projects through design, implementation, commissioning, and startup phases.
- Experience working within an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) environment is considered a strong asset.
Location Requirements
- Position will initially be based in Calgary, Alberta.
- The successful candidate must be comfortable working directly with operations and engineering personnel supporting Calgary-area operations.
- Following an anticipated transition period of approximately one year, the successful candidate must demonstrate a willingness to relocate to Edmonton, Alberta to support long-term operational requirements.
- Relocation assistance may be provided in accordance with company policy.

Education – Qualifications, Accreditation, Training:
Required:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Instrumentation, Computer, Process Control, or related Engineering discipline.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation or eligibility is preferred.
