JOB SUMMARY
Join our collaborative Pulmonary and Allergy team at Duke Medicine Specialties South Durham in a dynamic ambulatory RN role that offers variety, specialized nursing practice, and meaningful patient relationships. The RN will primarily partner with our Pulmonary providers while also cross-training in Allergy immunotherapy, creating opportunities to develop expertise in both specialties.
This role is ideal for an RN who enjoys combining hands-on patient care, assessment, education, care coordination, and clinical problem-solving. You will work closely with providers and an experienced clinical team to care for patients with asthma, COPD, allergies, and other complex pulmonary and allergy conditions while building specialized skills in immunotherapy and the recognition and management of allergic reactions.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Specialty Pulmonary Nursing: Partner closely with Pulmonary providers to support patients throughout their care. Perform nursing assessments, medication reconciliation, patient education, clinical coordination, medication administration, point-of-care testing, and preparation and assistance with examinations and procedures.
Allergy & Immunotherapy: Cross-train with our Allergy nursing team and develop specialized competency in allergen immunotherapy. Assess patients prior to treatment, administer prescribed immunotherapy, monitor for reactions, and recognize and respond to anaphylaxis and other medical emergencies. Perform medication calculations and dilutions and support safe immunotherapy preparation and administration in accordance with established protocols.
Patient Education & Relationships: Build relationships with patients managing chronic and complex conditions and provide individualized education that helps patients understand their medications, treatment plans, procedures, and strategies for managing their health at home.
Nursing Assessment & Care Coordination: Use RN assessment and critical-thinking skills to address patient needs through in-person and telephone encounters, collaborate with providers on changes in condition, coordinate follow-up care, and connect patients with appropriate resources.
Teamwork & Clinical Practice: Work alongside RNs, medical assistants, physicians, APPs, and clinic leadership in a highly collaborative specialty practice. Serve as a clinical resource, contribute to safe and efficient patient flow, and provide coverage across Pulmonary and Allergy based on patient and clinic needs.
Quality & Professional Growth: Maintain high standards for medication safety, infection prevention, emergency preparedness, and clinical documentation. Participate in quality improvement, regulatory readiness, staff education, and other opportunities to strengthen clinical practice and patient care.
JOB ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
- Work requires graduation from an accredited Associate's Degree in Nursing or Nursing Diploma program.
- All registered nurses without a Bachelor's degree in Nursing (or higher) are encouraged to enroll in an appropriate BSN program within two years of their start date but must complete the BSN program within seven years of their start date.
- Twelve months of appropriate clinical experience is required. At a manager's discretion, employees with 6 months of experience who are exceptional performers may be eligible for this level.
- This position is open to Clinical Nurse II and III. Clinical Nurse II team members may be eligible to apply to Duke’s Clinical Ladder following successful completion of Duke’s 90-day evaluation period.
- Must have current or compact RN licensure in the state of North Carolina. BLS required.

Monday-Friday; 8:00-4:30
