Position Description:
The Senior Project Manager, SDC Self-Perform is responsible for planning, coordinating, and managing the execution of Self-Perform Concrete on the Sturgeon Data Center project. Working as part of the project team, this role leads these scopes from planning and mobilization through closeout, with responsibility for field execution, manpower, materials, equipment, productivity, cost, schedule, safety, quality, and coordination with adjacent trades. The position is accountable for delivering this work safely, on schedule, within the project budget, and in accordance with the contract documents and project requirements.
This role will initially be based out of the project’s temporary joint venture office in downtown Edmonton, Alberta, before transitioning to the project site located just outside of Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta.
Essential Duties & Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the planning, coordination, and execution of the self-perform concrete, cladding and general requirements scope on the assigned project, including formwork, reinforcing steel, embeds and inserts, concrete placement, finishing, curing, and related activities.
- Partner with the Project Manager, Superintendent, concrete foremen, and field leadership to establish work plans, sequencing, crew sizes, production goals, and short-interval schedules aligned with the overall project schedule.
- Manage day-to-day operations in the field by monitoring manpower, equipment, material availability, production rates, and constraints, and take action to maintain schedule and productivity targets.
- Review contract documents, structural drawings, specifications, models, and scope requirements to confirm the concrete work plan, identify discrepancies or constructability issues, and drive RFIs and clarifications before they impact the work.
- Develop and maintain concrete pour plans and look-ahead schedules, coordinating excavation and access, formwork cycles, reinforcing steel, embeds, MEP sleeves, crane and pump locations, concrete truck flow, testing, and adjacent trade activities.
- Coordinate procurement, release, and delivery of reinforcing steel, formwork systems, concrete mix designs, embeds, accessories, curing materials, pumps, and other equipment required to support the concrete schedule.
- Track installed quantities, labor hours, production rates, equipment usage, and material consumption by cost code; compare actual performance to the estimate and productivity goals and implement corrective actions as needed.
- Maintain the concrete cost forecast and support project budget updates, including commitments, accruals, cost-to-complete, and projected labor, material, and equipment performance for the assigned scope.
- Manage change events affecting the concrete scope by quantifying impacts, documenting field conditions, maintaining time-and-material records, preparing pricing support, and coordinating change order resolution with the project team.
- Support concrete-specific Last Planner System® (LPS) and lean planning activities, including weekly work planning, constraint removal, reliable handoffs between crews and trades, and continuous improvement of field production.
- Lead quality planning and Quality Control (QC) for concrete work, including pre-pour inspections, formwork, reinforcing steel, embeds, dimensions and elevations, mix approvals, testing, placement, finishing, curing, tolerances, and deficiency closure.
- Work with the project safety team and field leadership to plan and execute concrete activities safely, including formwork and reshoring, work at heights, lifting, concrete pumps and hoses, access, weather conditions, and housekeeping.
- Manage concrete-related submittals and shop drawings, including reinforcing steel, formwork, mix designs, embeds, and related systems; review for conformance and constructability and track approvals and releases to support field execution.
- Resolve technical and field issues with designers, consultants, inspectors, testing agencies, suppliers, subcontractors, and the project team to avoid disruption to concrete operations and protect productivity.
- Lead concrete coordination, pre-pour, and planning meetings to communicate scope, schedule, logistics, safety, quality, manpower requirements, constraints, and handoffs with affected trades and project stakeholders.
- Direct and support concrete supervision and assigned project staff, set clear expectations, coordinate staffing needs, review time and production information, and provide timely feedback on performance.
- Verify concrete-related field quantities, invoices, and supplier or subcontractor charges and support project pay applications, billing, and cost reconciliation for the self-perform concrete scope as required.
- Provide project leadership with regular reporting on concrete schedule status, productivity, cost performance, risks, staffing, upcoming pours, constraints, and forecasted completion of the scope.
- Manage concrete scope closeout, including punch list and deficiency completion, as-built and turnover records, testing documentation, warranties, and other closeout requirements applicable to the work.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree, Diploma, or Certificate in Civil Engineering, construction, or related program from a recognized technical college .
- Demonstrated experience (minimum 4 years) of managing Self-Perform Concrete construction on active projects, including field planning, supervision of crews and foremen, productivity management, cost control, and schedule execution.
- Strong working knowledge of concrete means and methods, including formwork, reinforcing steel, embeds, concrete placement, finishing, curing, tolerances, and quality requirements.
- Ability to read, understand, and interpret contract documents, structural drawings and details, specifications, shop drawings, scopes of work, project schedules, and budgets.
- Experience with quantity tracking, project forecasting, procurement, change management, and cost control for labor, materials, equipment, and subcontracted components of concrete work.
- Experience with scheduling and schedule management.
- Strong field leadership, coordination, negotiation, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work effectively with trades, designers, suppliers, testing agencies, inspectors, and project stakeholders.
- Experience utilizing Building Information Modeling (BIM), Last Planner System® (LPS), and lean construction practices to support planning, coordination, and production.
- Professional written and verbal communication skills and proficiency with MS Office and other project management or construction technology platforms.
