Position Details:

Medical Assistant – Pediatric Oncology (Full-Time)

Location: Mercy Kids Cancer & Hematology, Mercy Hospital St. Louis
Schedule: Full-Time, 40 Hours/Week

Position Summary

The Medical Assistant (MA) supports pediatric oncology and hematology providers by delivering direct and indirect patient care in a professional, compassionate, and efficient manner. Working in a specialized pediatric setting, the MA partners closely with physicians to coordinate care for children and adolescents with cancer and blood disorders. The MA assists with clinical procedures, maintains accurate documentation, supports patient and family education, and performs administrative duties to ensure smooth daily clinic operations.

This role functions within the defined scope of practice under the supervision of a licensed provider and in alignment with Mercy's mission, values, and standards of care.

This position is essential to maintaining the physician-to-support staff ratio required for efficient clinic operations within Mercy Kids Cancer & Hematology. The Medical Assistant works directly alongside physicians in a one-to-one support model, helping ensure timely patient care, optimal clinic flow, and a positive experience for patients and families.

Without this position, patient flow would be significantly impacted, potentially limiting access to evidence-based care for pediatric oncology and hematology patients. This role also supports provider efficiency, caregiver engagement, patient satisfaction, and overall clinic performance.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

- Greet, room, and prepare pediatric patients for examination and treatment.
- Obtain and record vital signs, height, weight, pain assessments, and other relevant clinical information.
- Collect, verify, and update patient medical histories, including medication reconciliation.
- Assist physicians and advanced practice providers during examinations, procedures, and treatments.
- Perform basic diagnostic testing as delegated and deemed competent, including urine dipstick testing, blood glucose testing, EKGs, and specimen collection.
- Accurately document patient information, provider orders, and clinical activities within the electronic health record (EHR).
- Reinforce patient and family education provided by physicians or nursing staff.
- Assist with scheduling follow-up appointments, diagnostic testing, referrals, and care coordination activities.
- Maintain stocked, organized, and clean examination rooms and clinical work areas.
- Perform front-office responsibilities including answering phones, patient check-in/check-out, managing faxes, and scanning documents.
- Support quality improvement initiatives and participate in staff meetings and departmental activities.
- Follow all infection prevention, safety, regulatory, and organizational policies and procedures.
- Demonstrate sensitivity and compassion when interacting with pediatric patients and families facing complex medical conditions.
- Perform additional duties within the Medical Assistant scope of practice and according to state regulations and Mercy policies.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Completion of Mercy MA Clinic Academy training upon hire.

Certification

- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification preferred; may be required based on department guidelines.

Preferred Qualifications

Education

- Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program.

Experience

- One (1) year of experience in an outpatient, ambulatory, pediatric, hematology, oncology, or specialty clinic setting preferred.

Certification

- Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with children, adolescents, and families.
- Ability to provide compassionate, family-centered care in a pediatric oncology environment.
- Proficiency in electronic health record systems and clinical documentation.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to multitask and adapt in a fast-paced specialty clinic setting.
- Knowledge of outpatient clinical procedures and medical equipment.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with physicians, nurses, and multidisciplinary healthcare teams.
- Commitment to professionalism, continuous learning, and patient-centered care.
- Understanding of age-specific needs and developmental considerations for pediatric patients.

Work Environment

- Outpatient pediatric oncology and hematology clinic with frequent patient and family interaction.
- Fast-paced clinical setting requiring frequent collaboration with physicians and multidisciplinary care teams.
- Exposure to potentially infectious materials and bodily fluids; appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) provided.
- Requires standing, walking, lifting, and utilization of clinical equipment throughout the workday.

Physical Requirements

- Ability to push, pull, and/or lift up to 50 pounds on a regular basis.
- Prolonged periods of standing and walking during each shift.
- Ability to bend, kneel, squat, twist, reach, grip, and perform repetitive motions necessary to complete job duties.
- Ability to safely assist pediatric patients and support clinical procedures as required.
