Role Summary:
The Manager, Product Management will lead product planning, prioritization, and execution for complex healthcare workflows, turning business needs and ambiguous problems into clear product direction. This role is based in Boston, MA. The person in this role will work closely with cross-functional partners including engineering, design, clinical experts, implementation, operations, support, customer success, sales, and business stakeholders to shape product decisions and deliver meaningful outcomes. This position will report to a Group Product Manager.
Team Summary:
The Specialties Zone builds mission-critical clinical solutions used by healthcare providers every day. Our products support the distinct needs of specialty practices and care settings including Women’s Health, Behavioral Health, Ambulatory Surgery Centers, Urgent Care, Orthopedics, and more—helping providers simplify complex workflows, make informed clinical decisions, and deliver efficient, personalized care.
Our team works across product, clinical, operational, and technical disciplines to improve the experience of providers and staff. The work is focused on delivering practical solutions that improve usability, reliability, and workflow efficiency in healthcare environments.
Essential Job Responsibilities:
- Define product vision, priorities, and roadmap direction for complex clinical and operational workflows.
- Translate ambiguous customer, business, and market needs into clear, prioritized product plans and requirements.
- Partner with cross-functional stakeholders including engineering, design, clinical experts, implementation, operations, support, customer success, sales, and leadership to align on product goals and tradeoffs.
- Lead discovery and prioritization discussions using customer feedback, workflow insights, support trends, and product data.
- Manage backlog refinement, requirement development, acceptance criteria, and release planning in collaboration with delivery teams.
- Analyze product performance, transaction data, operational trends, and customer feedback to inform prioritization and identify improvement opportunities.
- Investigate product issues across workflows, systems, and teams to help drive resolution and root-cause understanding.
- Incorporate artificial intelligence tools into product management work to improve analysis, documentation, planning, and workflow efficiency, while evaluating where AI may improve the products and processes supported by this role.
- Support launch readiness, adoption, and post-release follow-up to help ensure product changes deliver value.
- Support customer and stakeholder conversations to gather feedback and validate product direction.
- Contribute to product discovery, sizing, and prioritization discussions for adjacent initiatives.
- Maintain product documentation and planning artifacts in tools such as Jira and Confluence.
- Collaborate with marketing, enablement, and support teams on launch readiness and adoption activities.
- Assist in evaluating AI-enabled tools that can improve product management workflows.
- Provide product context and decision support during issue triage and escalation management.
Expected Education & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience in computer science, information systems, business, healthcare administration, or a related field.
- 5+ years of overall professional experience.
- 3+ years of formal product management experience.
- Experience leading or contributing to product strategy, roadmap planning, prioritization, and execution in the role of a Product Owner or Product Manager.
- Experience working in Agile software delivery, including backlog refinement, requirements definition, acceptance criteria, and release planning.
- Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams such as engineering, design, clinical operations, implementation, support, customer success, and sales.
- Ability to understand and communicate complex system workflows, integration dependencies, data movement, and application behavior.
- Experience with healthcare clinical workflows, including provider, nursing, and ancillary staff workflows.
- Working knowledge of Jira, Confluence, and AI-enabled productivity or development tools.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with comfort using product metrics, transaction data, support trends, and operational data to guide decisions.
- Preferred experience with products requiring high reliability, complex integrations, exception handling, or operational monitoring.
- Occasional travel to customer sites, as needed.
Expected Compensation
$121,000 - $207,000
The base salary range shown reflects the full range for this role from minimum to maximum. At athenahealth, base pay depends on multiple factors, including job-related experience, relevant knowledge and skills, how your qualifications compare to others in similar roles, and geographical market rates. Base pay is only one part of our competitive Total Rewards package - depending on role eligibility, we offer both short and long-term incentives by way of an annual discretionary bonus plan, variable compensation plan, and equity plans.
