Job Title: Phlebotomist Job Description
This Phlebotomist position focuses on collecting high-quality specimens from patients of all age groups, with a strong emphasis on pediatric patients. You will perform blood collection using venipuncture and capillary techniques, package and process specimens for laboratory testing, and assist with additional lab procedures as needed. The role requires a comprehensive understanding of safety and compliance standards, the ability to communicate these standards clearly to others, and the skills needed to help orient and train patient service technicians.
Responsibilities
- Perform blood collection by venipuncture and capillary techniques on patients of all age groups, including pediatric and neonatal patients.
- Carry out pediatric blood collections and manage difficult draws, including patients in medical office buildings and both inpatient and outpatient settings.
- Review test orders carefully to ensure accuracy and completeness before specimen collection.
- Draw blood samples efficiently to meet volume expectations in both outpatient and inpatient environments.
- Package and process specimens according to laboratory protocols to maintain sample integrity and support accurate testing.
- Assist with additional laboratory procedures as needed, including potential support with specimen processing.
- Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of safety and compliance requirements and consistently apply them in daily work.
- Effectively communicate the importance of safety and compliance to colleagues and contribute to a culture of safe laboratory practice.
- Provide orientation and training to patient service technicians, sharing best practices in phlebotomy and specimen handling.
- Use laboratory information systems and computer applications to enter, track, and manage patient and specimen data accurately.
- Maintain excellent attendance, punctuality, and professional behavior to support reliable patient care and laboratory operations.
- Work an on-call schedule, including coverage for leaves of absence and vacations, and respond to same-day call-offs when needed.
- Work back-to-back weekends and holidays as required by the department schedule.
- Adapt to schedule changes and participate in training shifts, including noc training and daytime facility orientation.
- Meet performance expectations for patient volume, including drawing 4555 patients within an 8-hour shift in outpatient settings and 2030 patients within an 8-hour shift in inpatient settings.
Essential Skills
- Proficiency in blood collection using venipuncture and capillary techniques across all age groups, including pediatrics and neonates.
- Demonstrated ability to perform pediatric blood collections and manage difficult draws in various clinical settings.
- Strong understanding of laboratory safety and compliance standards, with the ability to apply them consistently.
- Ability to effectively communicate safety and compliance requirements to other staff members.
- Capability to provide orientation and training for patient service technicians in phlebotomy procedures.
- Phlebotomy certification (CPT 1 License).
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Computer proficiency and experience using laboratory information systems, such as Cerner or similar platforms.
- At least six months of experience in an acute or sub-acute setting, with a preference for one year of experience.
- Experience performing infant and neonatal blood draws.
- Experience working with pediatric patients in clinical or laboratory environments.
- Ability to consistently meet required patient draw volumes in both outpatient and inpatient settings.
- Excellent attendance record and professional behavior.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Hospital experience in an inpatient setting is a plus.
- Prior experience in outpatient laboratory environments (such as large reference labs) is highly valuable.
- Experience working in both outpatient and inpatient settings, balancing different workflow and volume requirements.
- Willingness to work back-to-back weekends as part of the regular schedule.
- Willingness to work holidays in alignment with department needs.
- Willingness to respond to same-day call-offs and provide on-call coverage for leaves of absence and vacations.
- Ability to adapt to an on-call basis schedule that may change over time.
- Comfort with training and acclimation periods that include full-time hours initially.
- Interest in professional development opportunities and learning resources offered after a specified tenure, such as roadmap programs and online learning platforms.
Work Environment
This role is based in a clinical laboratory environment that serves both inpatient and outpatient populations, with a strong focus on pediatric and neonatal patients. You will use standard phlebotomy equipment and work with laboratory information systems, such as Cerner or similar platforms, to manage orders and specimen data. The typical shift runs from 12:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., with schedules provided four weeks in advance. The position currently operates on an on-call basis, which may change over time, and requires flexibility to cover leaves of absence, vacations, same-day call-offs, weekends, and holidays. Training includes full-time hours to help you acclimate to the facility, with potential noc training and daytime orientation sessions around 8:00 or 9:00 a.m. The dress code for this role is red scrubs, reflecting a professional and consistent appearance. Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $26.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
