Role purpose
The Senior Manager, Technical & Asset Management is responsible for the day-to-day technical and asset management of the firm’s renewable-energy portfolio in China.
The role covers the full asset lifecycle, including pre-investment technical due diligence, construction oversight, operational performance, equipment and warranty matters, contractor management, technical reporting and exit preparation.
The successful candidate will lead the existing technical team and act as the primary interface between project-level technical activities and the Director. The role is expected to convert technical findings into clear assessments of financial, contractual and operational impact, develop practical recommendations and ensure that agreed actions are implemented.
The position requires a combination of renewable-energy technical experience, owner-side asset management capability, commercial awareness, team leadership and strong English communication skills.
Key responsibilities
1. Technical due diligence and investment support
- Lead technical due diligence for potential wind, solar and other renewable-energy investments.
- Review third-party resource assessments and energy-yield studies, and form independent in-house view.
- Appoint and manage external technical advisers and ensure that their work addresses the key investment risks.
- Reviewing and validating technical assumptions from sellers, developers, OEMs and advisers, and forming a documented internal technical view
- Identify material technical risks, quantify their potential impact and propose appropriate mitigation measures.
- Provide verified technical inputs and mitigation measures for investment models, transaction documentation and Investment Committee materials.
- Support the Director in determining how technical risks should be reflected in valuation, transaction structure and contractual protections.
2. Construction management
- Oversee the construction of renewable-energy projects from an owner’s perspective.
- Monitor construction progress, quality, HSE, permitting, commissioning and grid connection.
- Assess progress against contractual and investment-case milestones.
- Review contractor recovery plans and monitor implementation.
- Ensure that technical completion, testing, acceptance and handover requirements are properly documented.
- Escalate matters that may affect COD, grid connection, revenue commencement, subsidy or CFD eligibility, transaction milestones or contractual rights.
3. Operational asset management
- Oversee the technical and operational performance of operating renewable-energy assets.
- Monitor generation, availability, utilisation hours, curtailment, equipment reliability, tariff-related operational matters, OPEX and material budget variances.
- Compare actual performance with the original investment case, annual budget and latest forecast.
- Identify the root causes of material underperformance and develop corrective-action plans.
- Review annual operating plans, maintenance strategies and material CAPEX proposals.
- Monitor O&M contractor performance and compliance with contractual obligations.
- Support performance improvement, cost optimisation and asset-value enhancement initiatives.
4. Equipment quality, warranties and claims
- Lead the technical workstream for material equipment defects, performance issues and construction-quality disputes.
- Coordinate root-cause analysis, inspections, testing and independent technical reviews.
- Preserve technical evidence and ensure compliance with contractual notification requirements.
- Assess warranty coverage, supplier responsibility, remediation options and potential operational impact.
- Work with Legal, Investment and other internal functions to develop claims and negotiation strategies.
- Monitor potential generation losses, additional costs and other financial consequences.
- Escalate material claims and proposed commercial settlements to the Director for decision.
5. Contract and counterparty management
- Monitor technical compliance under EPC, O&M, equipment-supply, warranty and other material project contracts.
- Track key deliverables, performance guarantees, liquidated damages, warranties and acceptance requirements.
- Support technical and commercial negotiations with OEMs, EPC contractors, O&M providers and project partners.
- Ensure that the firm’s contractual rights are supported by appropriate technical evidence.
- Implement agreed contractual and commercial actions following Director-level approval.
6. Portfolio reporting and UK communication
- Prepare clear, decision-focused monthly technical and asset management reports.
- Explain the potential financial, contractual, valuation and investment implications of technical matters.
- Lead routine English-language technical and asset management discussions with UK team .
- Support the Director in preparing Investment Committee, fund-governance, LP and senior-management communications.
7. Team leadership and operating model
- Lead and develop the existing technical and asset management team.
- Set clear responsibilities, priorities, deliverables and quality standards.
- Allocate work across operations, construction/HSE, resource assessment and performance analysis.
- Establish an effective reporting and escalation protocol for the team.
- Develop standard procedures, dashboards, risk registers and reporting templates.
Candidate requirements
Essential experience
- At least seven years of relevant experience in renewable energy, infrastructure or power-sector technical and asset management.
- Sound understanding of energy-yield assessment, with the ability to review and sense-check generation calculations independently.
- Meaningful experience with wind projects; solar or other renewable-energy experience is advantageous.
- Owner-side experience covering both construction and operating assets.
- Experience managing technical due diligence and external technical advisers.
- Practical knowledge of project construction, commissioning, grid connection and operational performance.
- Experience managing EPC contractors, OEMs, O&M providers and other technical counterparties.
- Previous responsibility for managing staff, advisers or multidisciplinary project teams.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree or above in engineering, energy, power systems or a related discipline.
Language
- Native or fully professional Mandarin Chinese.
- Strong written and spoken English is essential.
