About this opportunity

Modern electronic systems can change their power consumption very rapidly. A switching power supply may provide sufficient average power but still experience output-voltage droop when a large load is enabled suddenly.

Conventional solutions include increasing output capacitance, raising the pre-charge voltage, increasing converter bandwidth, or using a larger power stage. These approaches can increase size, cost, losses, EMI, or control-loop stability problems.

This project will investigate whether a predictive pre-charge and auxiliary current-injection circuit can provide better transient performance while allowing the main SMPS to remain optimized for efficient average-power conversion.

What you will do

To design, simulate, and experimentally evaluate a hybrid transient-support circuit that reduces power-supply output droop during rapid load transitions. This is a thesis suitable for two students.

Proposed technical approach

Characterize the existing SMPS and identify the causes of output droop.

Develop a model of the converter, output capacitor, load, and pre-charge circuit.

Design a controlled auxiliary energy-storage and current-injection stage.

Add feedforward from the load-enable or load-current signal.

Develop feedback to regulate output voltage and auxiliary current.

Investigate adaptive pre-charge levels for different load conditions.

Analyze interaction between the SMPS control loop and the fast correction loop.

Validate the design using laboratory measurements.

The skills you bring

Mathematics; differential equations, small-signal modeling, feedback and control theory.

Electronics; MOSFET transistor behavior, PWM and current mode control, inductor, transformers, and capacitors.

Simulation skills; LT-spice, MATLAB/Simulink, and Python
