Reports to:  Cybersecurity and Functional Safety Manager Mx

The Role:

The Functional Safety Project Manager is responsible for driving and coordinating Functional Safety activities throughout the development of automotive low-voltage battery intelligent systems. Acting as the primary Functional Safety leader for the project, this role ensures compliance with ISO 26262, manages Functional Safety planning and governance through cross-functional engineering teams, and serves as the main interface to OEM customers for all Functional Safety matters.

What You’ll Do (Impact Areas)

Through strategic leadership, stakeholder alignment, and technical oversight, the Functional Safety Project Manager enables the successful delivery of safe, compliant, and customer-approved products to achieve project and compliance objectives.

Those activities Include :

- Plan, coordinate and drive the development and implementation of Functional Safety activities for automotive low-voltage battery system projects.
- Provide indirect leadership and coordination of Functional Safety Engineers assigned to the project, ensuring alignment of priorities, coordinating deliverables, monitoring progress, removing blockers, and facilitating timely completion of safety deliverables.
- Ensure effective integration of Functional Safety requirements, work products, and deliverables across Systems, Hardware, Software, and Production disciplines.
- Act as the primary customer interface for Functional Safety topics and represent Clarios in OEM Functional Safety reviews, workshops, audits, and assessments.
- Drive tracking and closure of Functional Safety risks, issues, action items, verification reviews, and change requests for the project.
- Lead cross-functional alignment and decision-making regarding Functional Safety activities, priorities, risks, and deliverables throughout the project lifecycle.
- Ensure compliance with ISO 26262 and Clarios Processes throughout the entire product development lifecycle.
- Prepare the project for customer audits, internal assessments, and Functional Safety evaluations.
- Promote Functional Safety best practices and continuous improvement across the organization.

Success in this role is measured by effective leadership, governance, and execution of Functional Safety activities while maintaining stakeholder confidence and project compliance.

Success indicators include:

- Successfully aligns and coordinates Functional Safety resources across Systems, Hardware and Software teams to achieve project milestones and customer commitments.
- Safety Plans, DIAs, assessments, verification reviews, and compliance activities are effectively managed and maintained.
- Functional Safety risks, issues, deviations, and action items are proactively identified, tracked, and resolved.
- Successful completion of customer audits, Functional Safety assessments, and confirmation reviews with minimal major findings.
- Strong alignment and engagement is maintained between engineering teams, project management, customers, suppliers, and assessors.
- Customers recognize Clarios as a trusted and competent Functional Safety partner.
- Clear and effective communication of Functional Safety status, risks, and decisions to senior management and key stakeholders.
- Supports in maintaining continuous improvement of Functional Safety processes, governance, and organizational maturity.

Core Competencies

- Functional Safety Management, Expert ability to plan, coordinate, govern, and oversee Functional Safety activities throughout the ISO 26262 lifecycle, supported by a strong technical understanding of safety concepts, safety mechanisms, and safety-related architectures.
- Project Leadership and Execution: Ability to lead Functional Safety Engineers and cross-functional teams to manage complex Functional Safety programs, priorities, milestones, deliverables, risks, and stakeholder expectations.
- Safety Analysis & Risk Assessment: strong understanding of HARA, FMEA, FMEDA, FTA, DFA, and related methodologies used to identify and mitigate safety risks.
- Systems Engineering; understands complex system architectures and interactions across multiple engineering domains, like HW/ SW/ Systems.
- Strategic Thinking and Decision Making; Balances compliance, business objectives, project constraints, and technical considerations to drive successful outcomes.
- Stakeholder Management and Customer Engagement: Ability to effectively communicate and influence to build alignment among customers, management, suppliers, and engineering teams.

What You Bring (Qualifications)

- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- Master’s degree in related field is a plus.
- Minimum 8 years of experience in Functional Safety engineering / management within the automotive industry, working in a Tier-1 supplier and/or OEM.
- Proven experience and practical application of ISO 26262, leading Functional Safety activities in complex automotive development programs, preferably within Battery Management Systems (BMS), energy storage systems, power electronics, or embedded automotive systems.
- Experience coordinating safety assessments, confirmation reviews, audits, and customer Functional Safety activities.
- Strong project management experience with cross-functional leadership in matrix organizations.
- Experience serving as the primary customer interface for Functional Safety topics.
- Demonstrated ability to influence technical decisions and drive project execution without direct organizational authority.
- Excellent communication, presentation, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills.
- Experience with systems engineering methodologies and safety-critical product development.
- General understanding of cybersecurity concepts and their interaction with Functional Safety.
- Experience working in global, cross-functional engineering organizations.
- Desired knowledge and experience in other Automotive relevant regulations like ASPICE / ISO/SAE 21434
- Certification in functional safety (e.g., TÜV Functional Safety Engineer) or Systems Engineering (e.g., INCOSE ASEP/CSEP) is a plus.

Work Model & Travel

Hybrid position based in Monterrey, Mexico, with occasional travel to the United States, Germany, and other locations to support project, customer, and business needs.
