Assistant Director, Cytogenetics Laboratory

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Emory University School of Medicine is seeking two faculty members to serve as Assistant Directors of Cytogenetics. Successful candidates will join a collaborative, multidisciplinary team dedicated to clinical excellence, education, and genomic innovation. The Assistant Directors will partner with laboratory staff, pathologists, clinicians, and institutional stakeholders to enhance existing services and expand testing capabilities. This position provides opportunities for leadership in the cytogenetic lab, test development, education, research, and collaborative projects, supporting an academic career through clinical work, scholarship, and innovation. Academic rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The Emory Cytogenetics Laboratory is a state-of-the-art diagnostic laboratory at Emory University Hospital, a leading academic medical center serving the Atlanta area. The laboratory offers a comprehensive range of cytogenetic and genomic diagnostic services, including constitutional and oncology cytogenetics, FISH, chromosomal copy number/SNP microarray, DNA methylation-based classification of CNS tumors, and NGS and emerging genomic technologies.

Clinical Responsibilities

The Assistant Directors will participate in the clinical operations and medical oversight of the Cytogenetics Laboratory, including:

- Reviewing, interpreting, and signing out clinical cytogenetic and molecular studies, including karyotype, FISH, chromosomal microarray, methylation, NGS, and other genomic testing

- Providing consultation to clinicians regarding test selection, interpretation, and follow-up testing

- Developing, validating, implementing, and optimizing new clinical assays and genomic technologies in collaboration with laboratory leadership, staff, and clinical stakeholders to expand clinical testing services

- Participating in quality assurance, regulatory compliance, and laboratory improvement initiatives, including troubleshooting technical and clinical issues

- Collaborating across pathology, genetics, oncology, pediatrics, and other clinical disciplines through multidisciplinary conferences, tumor boards, and other clinical activities

Qualifications

- D., D.O., Ph.D., or equivalent doctoral degree, with ABMGG board certification or eligibility in Laboratory Genetics and Genomics (LGG), or ABMGG board certification in Clinical Cytogenetics and Clinical Molecular Genetics/Genomics

- Expertise in clinical cytogenetics and/or genomic diagnostics, including chromosome analysis, FISH, chromosomal microarray, and molecular testing

- Experience with NGS, bioinformatics, genomic data analysis, variant interpretation, and clinical assay development is highly desirable

- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across laboratory, clinical, and academic teams
