Position Highlights
This Department of War (DoW) grant-funded position leads Army STEM Internships and Fellowships. RIT is the lead organization in the Army STEM Education Consortium (ASEC), a group of academic and non-profit organizations working together to administer a comprehensive portfolio of programming to attract, develop, and mentor the nation’s next-generation STEM workforce. Army STEM offers enrichment experiences, competitions, internships, fellowships, and professional development programs for students of all levels and their teachers. Army STEM Internships and Fellowships enable participants to do paid, hands-on research on real-world problems under the mentorship of Army scientists and engineers at Army-sponsored university labs and U.S. Army Laboratories and Research Centers nation-wide. Army STEM Internships are open to high school and undergraduate students, while graduate students and post-doctoral scientists and engineers are eligible for Army STEM Fellowships.
All essential duties and responsibilities of the Director of Army STEM Internships and Fellowships will support Army STEM strategic and operational goals. They will lead the entire Army STEM Internships and Fellowships initiative, with supervision and guidance from RIT’s Army STEM PI. The Director will represent Internships and Fellowships in ASEC and will coordinate and collaborate with the leads of Army STEM Teacher Fellows, the Army Research Office’s (ARO) Internships lead, and the Lab Program Coordinators (LPC) at each participating Army lab. The Director will oversee implementation of the STEM Foundations initiative, a virtual summer program to build STEM identity, and will develop and administer additional curriculums for the Army STEM Learning Management System (LMS). They will manage a staff and an annual budget of $10M+. Some travel required. Open to remote, hybrid, or onsite work arrangement.
Preferred qualifications include significant experience in STEM education, mentorship, and career development through graduate and post-doctoral training, experience with Army or DoW STEM, grant and budget management experience, and experience in leading teams to success. PhD preferred.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Designs programs that directly support the university’s strategic, academic, and operational goals. This includes developing project plans, defining objectives and success metrics, coordinating resources, and evaluating outcomes to ensure alignment with institutional priorities
- Serves as a liaison across departments to align goals, timelines, and deliverables for complex, multi-stakeholder projects. Facilitates communication, resolves conflicts, and ensures coordinated action to enhance program integration and overall institutional impact
- Develops and oversee program budgets, ensuring responsible financial stewardship. Regularly monitor expenditures and resource allocation. Establishes and tracks performance indicators to evaluate effectiveness, inform decision-making, and support continuous improvement
- Interprets and applies university policies, accreditation standards, and applicable external regulations to ensure programs operate in full compliance. Anticipates risks and implements practices that maintain institutional accountability and integrity
- Cultivates strong working relationships with internal departments, faculty, students, and external organizations. Leverages these partnerships to expand program reach, enhance visibility, and create opportunities for collaboration, funding, or innovation
- Identifies barriers to participation, promoting inclusive practices, and ensuring equitable access and representation. Regularly assess efforts to support a diverse and inclusive campus environment

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Knowledge of university policies, accreditation standards, and external regulatory requirements
- Knowledge of budgeting principles and fiscal management. Ability to develop, monitor, and reconcile program budgets, ensuring efficient use of resources and compliance with funding requirements
- Skill in collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data to assess program performance and support evidence-based decision-making
- Ability to apply this knowledge to ensure programs operate within legal and institutional frameworks
- Ability to communicate effectively across diverse groups and foster cooperation among academic, administrative, and external stakeholders
Minimum Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in related field
- 8 years of relevant experience
- Equivalent combination of experience and education may be considered
