About this role

Summary

As a Compliance Coordinator I, in the Division of Research and Academic Compliance, and under the personal supervision of the Manager, you will be responsible for the execution of audit plans that reflect compliance risks, suggesting new or modified policies or procedures where appropriate, identifying control issues, presenting reports to management, assisting management in the development of practical recommendations for improvement, and completing follow up reviews on compliance issues to assure that identified problems have been resolved, with a focus on compliance with laws, regulation and policy applicable to research and higher education.

Primary Responsibilities

- Work under the personal supervision of the Manager to ensure that audit and compliance objectives are met.
- Identify, research and objectively analyze problems from multiple perspectives to reach sound conclusions and make appropriate decisions and recommendations.
- Audit a variety of accounting, financial, operating records, procedures, educational and/or research records, invoices, and other sources requiring the application of professional auditing principles.
- Design and execute systematic audit plans that identify deficiencies in processes and procedures, regulatory compliance, operational efficiency and effectiveness, and subsequently propose solutions that balance both risk and cost-effectiveness. This process will include staff interviews, policy review, data analysis, and other detailed test work.
- Prepare work papers, questionnaires, schedules, process maps and summaries as necessary.
- Prepare formal audit reports that provide a summary of the process reviewed, audit issues identified, sample, audit results, research used (e.g. regulation, data analysis, outside resources…) and recommendations. Present audit report findings to appropriate management including, but not limited to Chairs, Chiefs and Department Administrators.
- Conduct individual training for Chairs, Chiefs, Department Administrators, faculty and staff regarding audit results. Conduct periodic individual educational sessions for Chairs, Chiefs, Department Administrators, faculty and staff on research or academic regulatory issues.
- Conduct research to locate and summarize federal or state laws or regulations pertaining to academic and/or research compliance requirements including the following federal agencies: FDA, OHRP, OCR, ORI, OMB, OLAW, DoE. Subjects may include Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), human subject research protections, animal use in research, grants management or any other federal or state law that impacts MCW research activities. Subjects may also include financial aid, accreditation, Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), or any other federal or state law that impacts MCW academic activities.
- Respond to all inquiries from departments on appropriate interpretations, procedures or practices.
- Conduct research from external resources to determine best practices.
- Work with the Office of General Counsel as appropriate.
- Perform other duties or projects as assigned.

Knowledge – Skills – Abilities

- In depth knowledge of health care operations or administration, research, human subject research, academic medicine, education; auditor should have knowledge of auditing practices.
- Strong analytical background necessary.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to collect, analyze, and evaluate information pertaining to compliance and the preparation of written reports of work performed.
- Excellent computer skills required.

Qualifications

Appropriate experience may be substituted for education on an equivalent basis.

Minimum Required Education: Bachelor’s Degree

Minimum Required Experience: 2 year’s

Preferred Education: Bachelor's Degree in business or healthcare field, or equivalent experience

Preferred Experience: 2 or more years of experience in healthcare research and academic setting with compliance, research, education, clinical trials, privacy, accreditation, grants management, and/or academic operation

Required Certification/Licensure(s): Within 6 months of hire date, and dependent upon position and expertise needed, obtain one of the following certifications: CHC, CITI, CCRP, or CCRC

Physical Requirements

Work requires occasionally lifting moderate weight materials, standing, or walking continuously.

Work Environment

Occasional exposure to dust, noise, temperature changes, or contact with water or other liquids. Work is performed in an environmentally controlled environment.

Sensory Acuity

Ability to detect and translate speech or other communication required. May occasionally require the ability to distinguish colors and perceive relative distances between objects. #LI-NK1
