About this role
Summary
The Director, Project Management provides strategic and operational leadership for the project management function within Major Projects & Engineering Services. The position leads Project Managers responsible for a portfolio of complex engineered equipment and EPC projects and is accountable for consistent project governance, customer delivery, financial performance, risk management, and organizational capability. The Director serves as a senior escalation point, aligns project execution with business objectives, and partners with Engineering, Project Controls, Supply Chain, Manufacturing, Quality, HSE, Finance, Legal, Commercial, and regional teams to deliver safe, compliant, predictable, and profitable outcomes.
Principle Responsibilities and Duties
Leadership & People Development
• Lead, coach, and develop the Project Management organization, including workforce planning, recruiting, onboarding, performance management, succession planning, and retention.
• Establish clear accountabilities, decision rights, escalation paths, and operating rhythms for Project Managers and assigned project teams.
• Build project leadership capability through mentoring, training, lessons learned, and consistent application of project management standards and tools.
Portfolio Governance & Execution
• Provide governance and executive oversight for a portfolio of complex, high-value, high-risk, and multi-product projects from handover through closeout.
• Ensure project teams integrate scope, schedule, cost, quality, procurement, manufacturing, logistics, commissioning, risk, change, and stakeholder requirements into executable plans.
• Chair or support project reviews, portfolio reviews, risk reviews, and recovery-plan reviews; drive timely decisions and verify closure of corrective actions.
• Promote disciplined use of Project Execution Plans, project charters, risk registers, change controls, schedules, cost forecasts, action logs, and closeout documentation.
Financial & Commercial Performance
• Own portfolio-level visibility and accountability for margin protection, cash flow, billing milestones, forecast accuracy, cost performance, contingency, and change-order recovery.
• Review project financial trends and variances, challenge assumptions, and direct corrective or recovery actions in partnership with Project Controls and Finance.
• Support negotiation and resolution of significant commercial issues, claims, variations, supplier matters, and customer disputes in coordination with Legal and authorized leadership.
Customer & Stakeholder Leadership
• Serve as the senior escalation point for key customers and internal stakeholders and support executive-level communication on project performance, risk, decisions, and commitments.
• Build trusted customer relationships while ensuring commitments remain aligned with approved scope, contract terms, schedule, cost, and organizational authority.
• Coordinate across regional and functional organizations to remove barriers, resolve interfaces, and align resources with portfolio priorities.
Strategy, Standards & Continuous Improvement
• Develop and implement project management strategy, governance, policies, procedures, templates, KPIs, and consistent reporting practices.
• Use portfolio data, audits, lessons learned, customer feedback, and project outcomes to improve predictability, execution efficiency, and organizational performance.
• Partner with Commercial and Applications teams on major proposals to validate execution strategy, resource requirements, schedule, risk, commercial assumptions, and project delivery approach.
• Champion effective adoption of project and project-controls systems, standard work, and digital tools that improve data quality, transparency, and decision-making.
HSE, Quality & Compliance
• Champion Enerflex core values and a proactive culture of safety, quality, integrity, accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
• Ensure projects comply with applicable contracts, company policies, delegated authority, quality requirements, HSSE expectations, and regulatory obligations.
• Perform other related leadership responsibilities and special assignments as required.
Qualifications
Education
• Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Business, or a related discipline required; an advanced degree is preferred.
Experience
• Fifteen or more years of progressive project management, engineering, operations, or commercial experience in engineered equipment, EPC, energy infrastructure, oil and gas, or a related industrial environment.
• Demonstrated experience leading Project Managers and cross-functional teams responsible for complex projects or project portfolios.
• Demonstrated knowledge of project financials, cost and schedule controls, risk management, change management, contracts, procurement, fabrication, and project closeout.
• Experience managing customer relationships, executive escalations, negotiations, recovery plans, and high-impact project decisions.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
• Strong strategic leadership, business acumen, financial judgment, organizational development, and change leadership capabilities.
• Ability to operate effectively in a matrix organization and influence across Engineering, Project Controls, Supply Chain, Manufacturing, Quality, HSE, Finance, Legal, Commercial, and regional teams.
• Excellent written and verbal communication, executive presentation, negotiation, conflict-resolution, and stakeholder-management skills.
• Strong analytical and decision-making skills with the ability to prioritize multiple high-impact issues in a fast-paced environment.
• Working knowledge of project management and enterprise systems; proficiency with Microsoft Office required. Experience with SAP, scheduling, project-controls, and document-management tools is preferred.

Physical Requirements
• Fast-paced professional office environment based in Houston, Texas.
• Domestic and international travel may be required to support customers, project teams, suppliers, fabrication facilities, and commissioning or start-up activities.
• May require work outside standard business hours to address critical project events, customer escalations, and global team needs.
• May be exposed to manufacturing, fabrication, construction, and operating environments; compliance with site-specific safety requirements is mandatory.
• May handle confidential commercial, customer, employee, and project information.
