Job Title: Laboratory Technician Gas & Hydrocarbon Testing Job Description
This Laboratory Technician role focuses on providing analytical support for gas and hydrocarbon liquid testing while strictly adhering to established quality, safety, environmental, and laboratory procedures. The position involves hands-on work with advanced analytical instruments, standardized test methods, and laboratory information systems to ensure accurate, timely, and well-documented results for internal and external stakeholders.
Responsibilities
- Receive and log samples accurately into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
- Perform analytical testing on gas and hydrocarbon liquid samples using Gas Chromatography (GC), RVP, molecular weight, density, and distillation methods.
- Follow standardized testing methods, including SOPs, GPA methods, and other approved analytical protocols to ensure data integrity and consistency.
- Generate, review, and report test results to customers, and communicate findings clearly via phone and email as needed.
- Conduct routine maintenance and basic troubleshooting of laboratory instruments and equipment to maintain optimal performance.
- Assist with cylinder cleaning, preparation, and shipping to support laboratory operations and sample handling workflows.
- Perform general laboratory housekeeping to maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
- Follow all laboratory safety, quality, environmental, and ethics procedures at all times.
- Maintain thorough documentation and recordkeeping for all tests, results, and laboratory activities in accordance with quality management system (QMS) requirements.
Essential Skills
- Associates or Bachelors degree in Chemistry, Biology, Physical Science, or a closely related field.
- Minimum of 2 years of laboratory experience in an analytical or testing environment.
- Experience working with Gas Chromatography (GC) in a laboratory setting.
- Proven ability to follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) and standardized test methods.
- Strong documentation and recordkeeping skills, including accurate data entry into LIMS and other systems.
- Ability to work comfortably and efficiently in a fast-paced laboratory environment.
- Experience performing analytical testing such as RVP, molecular weight, density, and distillation.
- Familiarity with quality management systems (QMS) and adherence to laboratory quality standards.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience in hydrocarbon, petroleum, chemical, energy, environmental, or testing laboratory settings.
- Experience using LIMS systems for sample tracking and data management.
- Familiarity with GPA and other industry-standard gas and hydrocarbon testing methods.
- Background in life science or analytical testing disciplines.
- Hands-on experience with laboratory instrumentation and basic equipment troubleshooting.
- Attention to detail and strong organizational skills to manage multiple samples and tests.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills for reporting and discussing test results.
- Commitment to ethical laboratory practices and continuous improvement in safety and quality.
Work Environment
The role is based in an active laboratory environment where employees regularly work near moving mechanical parts and with materials that may be explosive, toxic, caustic, or otherwise hazardous. The position involves routine exposure to fumes, airborne particles, chemicals, and potential risks of electrical shock, with robust safety procedures and protective measures in place. Work is hands-on with analytical instruments such as Gas Chromatography systems and other testing equipment, supported by LIMS and quality management tools. Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $26.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
