Job Title: Phlebotomist Inpatient / Acute Care (Night & Early Morning Shifts) Job Description
This inpatient Phlebotomist role focuses on highvolume blood collection in an acute care hospital setting. You perform venipuncture and capillary punctures, accession and process specimens, and support safe, timely laboratory services for patients of all agesfrom neonates and infants to children and adults. You work independently during early morning and night shifts, using hospital information systems to ensure accurate documentation and exceptional patient care.
Responsibilities
- Perform blood collection via venipuncture and capillary puncture on adults, children, infants, and neonates in an inpatient, acute care environment.
- Accession, label, and process blood specimens accurately and efficiently according to established laboratory procedures.
- Complete all phases of blood collection required by the department within normal time limits, including highvolume morning runs.
- Assess patient age and condition to select and apply appropriate phlebotomy techniques for a wide range of patient populations.
- Obtain blood samples from patients with special needs, including those with lines, on IVs, in isolation, or with various precautionary requirements.
- Provide professional, courteous customer service and maintain a calm, reassuring presence during blood draws.
- Work independently during early morning and night shifts, ensuring timely completion of draws for the morning census.
- Support coverage of morning runs for approximately 50 inpatients between 4:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m in a 510bed facility.
- Use laboratory information systems to document collections, track specimens, and coordinate with clinical and laboratory staff.
- Follow infection control, isolation, and safety protocols to protect patients, colleagues, and yourself.
- Adhere to patientcare communication standards such as AIDET / AHEART when interacting with patients and families.
- Collaborate with nursing, laboratory, and other clinical teams to prioritize stat and routine draws and maintain workflow.
- Maintain phlebotomy supplies, equipment, and work areas in clean, organized, and readytouse condition.
- Demonstrate reliability and flexibility in scheduling, including variable shifts and potential coverage up to seven days per week as needed.
Essential Skills
- Current California State Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) certification.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA).
- Experience performing venipuncture and capillary puncture on adults, children, infants, and neonates.
- Minimum one (1) year phlebotomy experience in an acute care hospital or at least five (5) years of ambulatory phlebotomy experience.
- Demonstrated ability to work comfortably in a highvolume blood draw environment, particularly during morning runs.
- Proficiency in inpatient phlebotomy workflows and acute care procedures.
- Ability to obtain blood samples from patients with special needs, including those with lines, on IVs, in isolation, or with special precautions.
- Capability to work independently and make sound decisions during early morning and night shifts.
- Strong customer service skills and professional bedside manner.
- Competence using laboratory information systems, including Sunquest, with the ability to adapt to EPIC.
- Availability to work at least 40 hours per week (80 hours per pay period) or 40+ hours biweekly, including nights and early mornings.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Approximately two (2) years of inpatient phlebotomy experience preferred.
- Neonatal phlebotomy experience strongly preferred.
- Familiarity with AIDET / AHEART patientcare communication standards preferred.
- Experience in an inpatient, acute care hospital setting, including large facilities with high patient census.
- Comfort working with pediatric patients in addition to adult populations.
- Knowledge of Sunquest information systems and Sunquest laboratory modules, with readiness to transition to EPIC within one year.
- Strong timemanagement skills and ability to handle highvolume morning draws efficiently.
- Ability to adapt to variable schedules and changing workflow demands.

Work Environment
This role is based in an inpatient, acute care hospital environment with a facility size of approximately 510 beds and a morning census of around 50 patients. You work in a highvolume morning draw setting, supporting early morning coverage and night shifts. Typical night schedules include three GY options: 21:0005:30, 22:3007:00, and 23:3008:00. The position is parttime at 40+ hours biweekly, with the expectation of at least 40 hours per week (80 hours per pay period) and flexibility for variable shifts. Coverage can extend up to seven days per week depending on your availability. You primarily work in inpatient units, interacting closely with nursing and laboratory teams. The environment uses Sunquest laboratory information systems and is transitioning to EPIC within approximately one year. The setting is fastpaced and clinically focused, with adherence to isolation and precaution protocols, professional attire suitable for hospital clinical staff, and an emphasis on safety, reliability, and patientcentered service.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $25.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
