About early careers

Your talent. Your skills. Your big ideas (and even bigger dreams). We know you have a lot to give. So we’ll make sure you get a lot in return. From next-level experiences to global impact. From inspiring teammates to exceptional support – we offer graduate and internship roles across multiple areas.

One Subsurface graduate programme - Petrophysics

Curiosity uncovers what others can't see. Through the One Subsurface early careers programme, you'll apply science, data and technical expertise to understand the resources beneath the surface and help shape how energy is delivered to the world.

Why work in One Subsurface at bp?

- Experience different subsurface disciplines through structured rotations and projects.

- Apply science, data and technical expertise to real business challenges.

- Learn from experienced specialists and dedicated mentors who support your development.

- Join a global network built on collaboration, curiosity and continuous learning.

As part of the One Subsurface programme, you’ll complete a 3 year programme with two rotations designed to give you breadth of experience across your chosen business area while also supporting you to build technical depth. Whether you're analysing data, interpreting the subsurface or helping solve complex technical challenges, you'll gain real-world experience that helps turn academic knowledge into practical expertise.

Join us and you’ll get the support of a structured technical pathway and our training programme, designed to help you grow both professionally and personally. In return, you'll bring your ideas, curiosity and ambition to real business challenges. Along the way, you'll be part of a supportive bp early careers community that will help you grow, succeed and make a meaningful impact from day one.

As a Petrophysicist joining our multi-disciplinary and multicultural subsurface teams, you’ll work on our global exploration programme, new field developments or on a producing asset - all dynamic, collaborative environments. You’ll interact with geoscientists; reservoir, petroleum and drilling engineers; as well as commercial and other disciplines to turn your evaluations into business decisions and actions.

Displaying bp’s core beliefs you’ll become part of an organization committed to a diverse, energetic and inclusive culture that thrives on open, transparent and constructive feedback. You’ll have good numeracy skills, be dedicated, enthusiastic, and committed. To succeed, you’ll need a passion to support the energy transition, a willingness to learn, and a determination to excel and deliver results.

Petrophysicists play a crucial role in our efforts to produce enough oil and gas to help satisfy the world’s growing demand for energy. They define the volume and distribution of oil and gas in our reservoirs, as well as their flow characteristics. They investigate the properties of reservoir rocks, defining their porosity, permeability and how reservoir fluids interact with the reservoir matrix. This involves the integration of direct measurements of reservoir properties (from core and fluid samples extracted from the reservoir) with sophisticated indirect measurements made by logging tools lowered into boreholes. These tools measure the nuclear, electrical and acoustic response of rocks and the integrated results are used to predict the volume and distribution of the hydrocarbons and optimize the methods of extraction.

Role and responsibilities

The precise nature of your graduate role and project will be determined by your skills as well as the needs of the business, but your responsibilities include:

- Working on projects and supporting your team to find the best solutions
- Helping to maintain performance within your team and for bp as a company
- Building relationships both within bp and with our external partners, collaborating across functions, segments and teams to deliver excellence
- Demonstrating drive and dedication through the bp values with an emphasis on safety

Requirements

- Be currently pursuing a bachelor’s or postgraduate degree in Petrophysics, Geology, Geophysics, Petroleum Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Materials Science or similar discipline
- Maintain a CGPA of 7 & above
- Should be class of 2027
- Have a willingness to learn, a passion to excel and deliver results
- In addition, demonstrable data science skills would be advantageous for any geoscience candidate applying for a role in bp. Specifically, proficiency in using statistical methods to interrogate large datasets for geological insight, and in the application of using scripting languages such as Python and R, and development environments such as Jupyter and Rstudio.
