About this role
Job Title: Field Service Engineer Semiconductor Equipment Job Description
The Field Service Engineer supports advanced semiconductor manufacturing equipment in a high-volume cleanroom fabrication environment. This highly technical, hands-on role focuses on equipment reliability, fault isolation, root cause analysis, and restoration of complex process tools that are critical to semiconductor production. You will troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, vacuum, and control systems using schematics, diagnostic software, system logs, and test equipment to minimize production downtime and maximize tool performance. This position is ideal for engineers and technicians who enjoy real, on-equipment troubleshooting and working with sophisticated automation and manufacturing systems in a fast-paced environment where equipment uptime is essential.
Responsibilities
- Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair complex semiconductor process equipment that includes electrical, mechanical, electromechanical, pneumatic, vacuum, and control system components.
- Perform advanced fault isolation and root cause analysis using electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, ladder logic, control system documentation, software diagnostics, and system alarms.
- Use diagnostic tools such as digital multimeters, oscilloscopes, process monitoring instruments, and specialized software to identify and analyze equipment failures.
- Repair or replace critical system components including motors, servo systems, sensors, PLC I/O components, power supplies, relays, valves, pumps, vacuum components, controllers, and motion control hardware.
- Execute preventive, predictive, calibration, and corrective maintenance activities in strict accordance with equipment specifications and manufacturing requirements.
- Support equipment installation, startup, commissioning, qualification, software upgrades, and acceptance testing for semiconductor process tools and automation systems.
- Analyze equipment performance data to identify trends and opportunities to improve reliability, reduce recurring failures, and increase overall equipment effectiveness (OEE).
- Respond promptly to equipment alarms, process excursions, and unscheduled downtime events, driving rapid resolution to protect production output.
- Collaborate closely with process engineers, manufacturing engineers, operators, maintenance teams, and customer stakeholders to resolve complex technical issues affecting production.
- Maintain detailed service documentation including troubleshooting steps, corrective actions, failure analysis reports, and maintenance records to ensure traceability and knowledge sharing.
- Complete equipment-specific technical training and continuously develop expertise on semiconductor process systems, automation platforms, and emerging technologies.
- Work on automated material handling systems (AMHS), including automated transportation networks that move wafer pods (FOUPs) throughout the fab between process tools, stockers, and manufacturing areas.
- Apply structured root cause analysis methodologies to identify failure mechanisms, implement robust corrective actions, and prevent repeat issues in high-uptime manufacturing environments.
- Follow procedures with precision while maintaining a strong focus on safety, quality, and tool uptime during all maintenance and troubleshooting activities.
- Act as a dependable and responsive technical resource capable of performing effectively during critical production-impacting events.
Essential Skills
- Strong ability to diagnose and resolve failures in electrical, electromechanical, and control systems using systematic troubleshooting methods.
- Solid understanding of electrical systems, including power distribution, motors, sensors, relays, control circuits, and industrial automation components.
- Experience interpreting electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, P&IDs, assembly drawings, and technical manuals.
- Working knowledge of PLC-based control systems, motion control systems, HMIs, industrial networks, and automated manufacturing equipment.
- Hands-on experience troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining complex automated or semiconductor equipment in high-tech manufacturing environments such as semiconductor, industrial automation, aerospace, defense, or automotive.
- Familiarity with pneumatic, vacuum, motion control, robotics systems, and precision mechanical assemblies.
- Ability to perform advanced fault isolation using diagnostic data, alarm histories, equipment logs, and process monitoring tools.
- Demonstrated capability to identify failure mechanisms, implement effective corrective actions, and prevent repeat issues in high-uptime production environments.
- Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to replace, align, and verify mechanical assemblies and precision components.
- High level of technical coachability, with proven ability to learn complex equipment platforms and absorb technical training quickly.
- Consistent adherence to procedures with a strong focus on safety, quality, and equipment uptime.
- Dependable and responsive work style, with the ability to perform effectively during critical production-impacting events.
- Customer service orientation, with the ability to support stakeholders while managing service and maintenance priorities.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Engineering Technology, or a related technical discipline is preferred.
- Experience using diagnostic equipment such as digital multimeters, oscilloscopes, and specialized process monitoring tools.
- Experience supporting high-uptime manufacturing or production environments is preferred.
- Background as a maintenance technician, field service technician, or electronics technician in automated manufacturing settings is beneficial.
- Familiarity with semiconductor equipment, AMHS systems, and cleanroom fabrication processes is highly desirable.
- Exposure to vacuum systems, robotics, servo systems, and precision mechanical assemblies is a plus.
- Ability to work effectively within cross-functional teams that include engineering, operations, and maintenance personnel.
- Strong documentation skills for recording troubleshooting steps, maintenance activities, and failure analysis.
- Interest in ongoing professional development and continuous learning in semiconductor process technology and automation.
