About this role
Job Title: Mechanical Engineer Electric Propulsion and Battery Systems (early career candidates welcome) Job Description This Mechanical Engineer role focuses on the design, documentation, and release of advanced electric propulsion and battery systems for aviation and other mission-critical applications. You will transform requirements and use cases into detailed CAD models and complete design packages, supporting products as they move from development into real-world production. The position emphasizes product release, engineering documentation, and manufacturing support rather than net-new conceptual design, offering the opportunity to work on next-generation electrification technology that is actively changing the future of aerospace, defense, mobility, energy storage, data centers, and heavy transportation. Responsibilities
- Apply aerospace-standard mechanical design practices to electric aircraft motors and sub-components, including machined components, bearing selection and sizing, material selection, coatings, fasteners, lubricants, and design-for-manufacturing (DFM).
- Evaluate requirements and use cases to create, iterate, and refine detailed CAD models and mechanical designs for battery systems and electric propulsion units.
- Conduct trade studies on design and manufacturing options, identifying methods to reduce technical and manufacturing risk and support technology development.
- Produce complete design packages, including detailed engineering drawings, analysis reports, bills of materials (BOMs), and clear assembly instructions.
- Generate and maintain engineering documentation, including production drawing generation, test requirements, and technical reports that support product release.
- Review designs, manufacturing plans, and test procedures to ensure compliance with mechanical, aerospace, and performance requirements.
- Coordinate closely with cross-functional teams, including Quality, Sourcing, Manufacturing, and Testing, to support hardware delivery and operations.
- Lead the resolution of technical problems, driving root-cause analysis and achieving buy-in from cross-functional stakeholders.
- Develop a strong understanding of technical and certification requirements for electric propulsion units used in aviation applications.
- Support manufacturing engineering activities, including DFM reviews, production manufacturing processes, and hardware build and assembly.
- Contribute to the transition of products from prototype to production, ensuring designs are robust, manufacturable, and properly documented.
- Participate in design and engineering reviews, offering informed recommendations on materials, structural approaches, and manufacturing techniques.
- Analyze test results and provide clear feedback and recommendations to improve product performance, reliability, and manufacturability.
- Collaborate directly with experienced engineers in a highly interactive environment to refine designs and accelerate product release.
- Maintain familiarity with PLM and QMS systems to manage configuration control, documentation, and release processes for mechanical hardware.
Essential Skills
- Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering preferred; Bachelors degree in Aerospace Engineering considered.
- Approximately 15 years of mechanical or aerospace engineering experience preferred; open to early-career engineers with strong technical capability.
- Proficiency with SolidWorks for 3D CAD modeling, mechanical design, and engineering drawings.
- Experience creating and interpreting engineering drawings, including production drawing generation and GD&T.
- Hands-on experience with mechanical design for aerospace hardware, propulsion systems, or complex mechanical assemblies.
- Demonstrated ability to support manufacturing, including design-for-manufacturing (DFM) and production manufacturing support.
- Experience with engineering documentation, including design packages, BOMs, assembly instructions, and technical reports.
- General familiarity with PLM systems for managing product data and configuration control.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools for documentation, reporting, and communication.
- Ability to conduct and participate in structural and mechanical analysis, with Ansys experience preferred.
- Understanding of materials and processes relevant to aerospace hardware, including machined components, coatings, fasteners, and lubricants.
- Ability to coordinate with cross-functional teams and support hardware delivery from design through production.
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to lead resolution of technical issues in a collaborative environment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with Ansys or similar tools for structural analysis and simulation.
- Background in manufacturing engineering, including production manufacturing processes and DFM.
- Direct experience with product release activities, including documentation, configuration management, and design sign-off.
- Exposure to battery systems, electric propulsion, and electric machine design.
- Experience with aerospace applications, aviation propulsion systems, and aerospace hardware.
- Familiarity with carbon fiber composites, including carbon fiber layups and composite structures.
- Experience with sheet metal manufacturing and forming processes.
- Hands-on exposure to CNC machining and production of milled aluminum components.
- Experience working with titanium parts and other advanced aerospace materials.
- Knowledge of mechanical assemblies and hardware integration for complex electro-mechanical systems.
- Experience with production manufacturing environments and support of hardware delivery.
- Interest in applications beyond aerospace, including defense, mobility, energy storage, data centers, and heavy transportation.
- Desire to work in a high-visibility role with meaningful ownership and direct impact on program execution.
- Strong potential for long-term career growth mindset, aligned with a rapidly scaling engineering organization.
Work Environment You will work closely with a rapidly growing engineering team that develops aerospace-grade batteries, power electronics, power distribution systems, electric engines, and supporting software for mission-critical applications across aerospace, defense, mobility, space, energy storage, and data centers. The environment is fast-paced, collaborative, and focused on moving technology from prototype to production, with strong organizational investment and executive support driving aggressive growth and new product expansion.
