About this role
Job Title: Mechanical Engineer Electric Propulsion and Battery Systems Job Description
This Mechanical Engineer role focuses on the design, documentation, and release of electric propulsion and battery system products for advanced aerospace and electrification applications. You will translate requirements and use cases into detailed CAD models and complete design packages for electric motors, battery systems, and associated structures. The position emphasizes product release, production-ready documentation, and cross-functional collaboration more than net-new concept design, offering the opportunity to help bring next-generation electrification technology from development into real-world production.
Responsibilities
- Apply aerospace-standard design practices to electric aircraft motors and sub-components, including machined components, bearing selection and sizing, material and coating selection, fasteners, lubricants, and design-for-manufacturing (DFM) considerations.
- Evaluate requirements and use cases to create, iterate, and refine detailed CAD models for rotatives, structures, and assemblies used in electric propulsion and battery systems.
- Conduct trade studies on design and manufacturing options, identifying methods for risk reduction and technology development to improve performance, manufacturability, and reliability.
- Produce complete design packages including detailed engineering drawings, analysis reports, bills of materials (BOMs), and assembly instructions suitable for production release.
- Develop, maintain, and release engineering documentation, including design documentation, test requirements, and technical reports, ensuring alignment with configuration management and PLM processes.
- Conduct reviews of designs, manufacturing plans, and test procedures to ensure compliance with design, performance, and certification requirements for electric propulsion units and related hardware.
- Coordinate closely with Quality, Sourcing, Manufacturing, Testing, and other departments to support hardware delivery, operations, and issue resolution throughout the product lifecycle.
- Lead the resolution of technical problems, driving root cause analysis and corrective actions while achieving buy-in from cross-functional teams.
- Support production drawing generation and provide manufacturing support, including addressing shop floor questions and incorporating feedback into design updates.
- Develop a strong understanding of technical and certification requirements for electric propulsion units for aviation and apply this knowledge to product design and documentation.
- Support the transition of products from prototype to production, ensuring that designs, documentation, and processes are robust, repeatable, and ready for commercialization.
- Contribute to the design and release of battery systems and electric propulsion systems, including electric motors, electric machines, and associated aerospace hardware.
- Participate in structural analysis activities, including the use of tools such as Ansys (when applicable) to validate designs and support product release.
- Collaborate with experienced engineers in a highly interactive environment, sharing knowledge and contributing to continuous improvement of design and documentation practices.
- Engage in ongoing technology development in areas such as batteries, electric motors, power systems, aerospace hardware, and advanced manufacturing, with a focus on bringing new technologies into real-world production.
Essential Skills
- Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering preferred; a Bachelors degree in Aerospace Engineering will also be considered.
- Approximately 15 years of mechanical or aerospace engineering experience preferred, with openness to early-career engineers who demonstrate strong technical capability.
- Proficiency with SolidWorks for 3D CAD modeling, detailed part and assembly design, and drafting.
- Experience creating engineering drawings and production drawing generation, including appropriate dimensioning and tolerancing (such as GD&T).
- Mechanical design experience for complex mechanical assemblies, preferably in aerospace, propulsion systems, or related industries.
- Demonstrated ability to apply design-for-manufacturing (DFM) principles to ensure designs are suitable for production manufacturing.
- Experience with engineering documentation, including design documentation, test requirements, and technical reports in a controlled environment.
- General Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) experience for managing revisions, configurations, and product release.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools for documentation, reporting, and communication.
- Experience supporting manufacturing, including responding to production issues and integrating feedback into design updates.
- Familiarity with aerospace hardware, aviation propulsion systems, or electric machine design.
- Ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams and to lead or support resolution of technical issues across engineering, manufacturing, and quality functions.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with Ansys or similar tools for structural analysis and validation of mechanical designs.
- Background in manufacturing engineering, including exposure to production processes and methods.
- Product release experience in a regulated or aerospace environment, including ownership of design packages through release.
- Experience with carbon fiber composites, including carbon fiber layups and composite structures.
- Exposure to battery systems and electric propulsion systems, including electric motors and electric machines.
- Experience with sheet metal manufacturing and associated design practices.
- Hands-on familiarity with CNC machining and production manufacturing environments.
- Experience with milled aluminum parts, titanium components, and other precision machined aerospace components.
- Knowledge of mechanical assemblies for aerospace or high-reliability applications.
- Experience working with aerospace hardware and understanding of aerospace engineering practices.
- Interest in or exposure to applications such as defense, mobility, energy storage, data centers, and other electrification-focused technologies.
- Strong interest in bringing next-generation electrification technology from development into production and supporting commercialization efforts.
- Comfort working in a high-visibility role with meaningful ownership and direct impact on program execution, including supporting aggressive growth and new product expansion.
Work Environment
This role is based in an on-site office setting with a hybrid schedule typically consisting of three days on-site and two days remote each week. There is an initial preference for more on-site collaboration to support onboarding, training, engineering interaction, familiarity with the Quality Management System (QMS), and effective use of PLM systems. You will work closely with a rapidly growing engineering organization focused on electrifying aircraft and other mission-critical applications, using aerospace-grade batteries, power electronics, power distribution systems, electric engines, and software built on an advanced 800-volt architecture. The environment emphasizes collaboration with highly experienced engineers, direct interaction with manufacturing and test teams, and frequent exposure to production hardware and advanced manufacturing processes. The culture values innovation, rapid learning, and seeing designs quickly translated into deliverable hardware, with strong organizational investment and executive support enabling aggressive growth, commercialization, and long-term career development opportunities.
