About this role

Job Description:
At Remitly, we believe everyone deserves the freedom to access, move, and manage their money wherever life takes them. Since 2011, we've tirelessly delivered on our promise to customers sending money globally, providing secure, simple, and reliable ways to manage their money, ensuring true peace of mind. Whether it's supporting loved ones back home, growing a business across continents, or pursuing new opportunities abroad, we're not just here to move money — we're here to move our global customers forward. We're looking for builders, reimaginers, and global thinkers who want to work at the intersection of technology, trust, and transformation. If that's you and you're ready to do the most meaningful work of your career — we invite you to join over 2,800 passionate Remitlians worldwide who are united by our vision to transform lives with trusted financial services that transcend borders.
About the Role:

Remitly is building the Remitly Global Card: a card, wallet, and built-in credit line that give customers a single, trusted place to hold, spend, borrow, and move their money, launching across multiple geographies. As a Senior Data Engineer on the Global Card team, you will own the engineering of the team's data foundation end to end: the pipelines that bring in card, credit, payments, and product data; the schemas and data marts that analysts and data scientists rely on; and the checks that keep that data accurate and on time. You will lead the technical direction for this space: partnering with product, analytics, and data science on what to build, anticipating problems early, and choosing right-sized designs that scale with the business. Our team works across the stack to get the job done, so you will also contribute to the backend services that power our products as the need arises. We move fast, use agentic coding tools every day, and hold a high bar for excellence. You will report to the Engineering Manager and work from our Arlington, VA office on a hybrid schedule.

You Will:

- Own the data foundation: Design, build, and operate the schemas, pipelines, and data marts behind Remitly Global Card across card, credit, and payments, including the feature pipelines that supply our credit and fraud models. Partner with data scientists on feature definitions and validation.
- Lead technical direction: Define the architecture and roadmap for our data systems, anticipate where the business is headed, and choose designs that fit the problem and stay fast, reliable, and cost-efficient as we scale.
- Build trust in our data: Put data quality and monitoring in place across our marts and model features: testable freshness and reliability targets; completeness, consistency, and business-rule checks; automated tests for pipeline changes; and alerts with clear owners. Diagnose failures, manage safe backfills and recovery, and validate data against source records.
- Turn business needs into data products: Partner with product managers, analysts, and data scientists to shape requirements and turn them into reusable schemas and data contracts, well-modeled tables, shared metric definitions, and documentation, including lineage, so that people and AI tools can run their own queries and build their own dashboards.
- Raise the engineering bar: Set standards for data modeling, design and code review, CI/CD, access control, and sensitive data handling, including retention and deletion. Review mart changes from other contributors, and use agentic coding tools to move faster while validating generated code and protecting sensitive data.
- Work across the stack: Build and improve the backend services that power our products as the need arises, and work with platform teams to reuse and extend shared data infrastructure, tooling, and standards.
- Mentor and grow the team: Guide engineers and analysts through design reviews, code reviews, and pairing. Represent Remitly's cultural values and technical competencies in interviews.

You Have:

- A degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Expert SQL and strong data modeling skills, including dimensional modeling, schema evolution, and designing tables that analysts and data scientists can use at scale.
- Experience building and operating large-scale data pipelines, including orchestration, incremental batch loads, and streaming, using distributed processing or query engines (e.g., Spark, Trino, EMR) on cloud infrastructure (e.g., AWS), with data quality checks, testing, and monitoring built in.
- Proficiency in at least one programming language used for data and backend work (e.g., Python, Scala, Java, Go), and experience building and operating backend services.
- Experience leading projects at the team level, including setting technical direction, breaking work into parallel workstreams, estimating timelines, and mentoring other engineers.
- Demonstrated ability to partner with product, analytics, and data science stakeholders to turn ambiguous business needs into clear technical plans and drive decisions to resolution.
- Experience using AI tools throughout your development workflow, with sound judgment about reviewing and testing generated code and protecting sensitive data.
- 5+ years of data engineering experience in a collaborative, cross-functional team environment.
- Bonus: Experience with financial data in fintech, lending, or payments, where accuracy, security, and compliance shape engineering decisions.
