Basic Job Functions:
NBT's Data & Analytics team is seeking a Senior Data Engineer to build upon the data platform, its standards, and its roadmap. As the senior technical contributor, you will solve complex data platform challenges, define the standards other engineers build against, and serve as a technical partner to Database Administrators, BI Analysts, and application teams — turning operational and business needs into secure, scalable, and reliable solutions across data pipelines, lakehouse architecture, and platform infrastructure.
This is a senior individual contributor role that provides leadership through expertise, coaching, and technical stewardship rather than formal people management. The role shapes standards, promotes best practices, and helps develop team capabilities. This is a full-time position based in Waterloo, IN.
Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the US (Nucor Business Technology (NBT) will not sponsor the need for a visa now or in the future).
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- - Build upon the Lakehouse pattern — layer boundaries, what belongs where, and how domains relate — and set the pattern, transformation, and orchestration standards other engineers work inside.
- - Provide technical leadership — mentor engineers, review pipeline and transformation designs before they're built, and resolve problems others cannot.
- - Own the monitoring and observability standard so problems surface before stakeholders find them.
- - Partner with Database Administrators, IT, and Nucor business divisions (including NBG) on connectivity, network security, and data access policy; build durable relationships with data and technology leaders across - - Nucor divisions and represent NBT in enterprise forums and communities of practice.
- - Lead the data platform and engineering tooling roadmap by prioritizing legacy platform migrations, establishing migration and cutover standards, guiding migrate, rebuild, or retire decisions, and serving as a strategic advisor to stakeholders, BI teams, and application leadership on data platform initiatives.
- - Treat data accuracy, reliability, and platform availability as safety-critical responsibilities; proactively identify and escalate risks tied to data quality, platform stability, and access control.
Safety is the most important part of all jobs within Nucor; therefore, candidates must be able to demonstrate the ability to initiate, lead, and uphold safety policies, practices, procedures, and housekeeping standards at all times.
Minimum Qualifications:
- - Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related discipline. Equivalent combination of experience and education is also acceptable.
- - Ten or more years of experience in data engineering, business intelligence architecture, or enterprise data platform roles.
- - Five or more years in a senior-level technical role (e.g., senior engineer, architect, or similar) that includes providing mentorship, coaching, or technical guidance to other engineers or developers.
- - Demonstrated experience architecting and operating an enterprise data warehouse or cloud data platform (e.g., Azure Synapse, Databricks, Microsoft Fabric) that serves as the source of truth for organizational reporting and analytics.
- - Candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship, now and in the future. NBT is unable to provide sponsorship for this role.
Preferred Qualifications:
- - Hands-on Databricks development for specific initiatives (e.g., Python-based data engineering work) and/or Microsoft Fabric (Lakehouse, Data Factory, Notebooks).
- - Experience designing dimensional/star-schema models and semantic layers for business reporting, including gold-layer design within a medallion/lakehouse pattern.
- - Working knowledge of Azure data services: Data Lake Storage Gen2, Key Vault.
- - Experience with CI/CD and infrastructure-as-code for data engineering artifacts (Azure DevOps; ARM/Bicep or Terraform).
- - Experience mentoring engineers, building career/skills rubrics, and setting technical standards for a team.
- - Hands-on experience optimizing Power BI/Fabric capacity, cost, and performance.
- - Experience integrating and consolidating data across multiple ERP systems.
- - Experience with Master Data Management, data governance, and customer/product identity resolution.
- - Experience in manufacturing, industrial, or similarly operations-driven sectors is a plus.
