About this role

The Castings Manufacturing Engineering Group is the part of the Materials Engineering Group responsible for the design, build, launch and handover of state of the art Casting lines and equipment currently used for vehicle and humanoid programs. This team is focusing on achieving the highest efficiency, manufacturing volume and safety while proving performance and documenting every aspect of the project for handover to sustaining.

The Sr. Manufacturing Controls Development Engineer, SCADA will own the plant-floor-to-enterprise data layer for Tesla's Die Casting operations, from Siemens PLCs on the equipment through Ignition SCADA, historians, and MES interfaces. This role pairs core Siemens controls ownership - TIA Portal PLC architecture, WinCC HMI, electrical design, and machine safety - with deep Ignition and industrial data architecture capability across the Giga Press lines, robotic cells, conveyors, and process monitoring systems. You will architect scalable Ignition gateways, standardize tag and UDT models, and build the downtime, OEE, and quality visibility that production and engineering depend on - turning raw equipment signals into decisions that move throughput.

- Architect, develop, and deploy Ignition 8 applications (Perspective and Vision) - tag and UDT architecture, templates, alarming, historian, and downtime, OEE, and quality dashboards - extending the platform with Python/Jython and SQL
- Build and maintain the plant data pipeline across OPC UA, MQTT/Sparkplug B, PROFINET, and SQL, moving equipment data from PLCs, drives, robots, and vision systems into historians, dashboards, and enterprise systems
- Architect, develop, and debug Siemens PLC code in TIA Portal with an emphasis on code that is organized, structured, documented, maintainable, and reusable across equipment families
- Develop and optimize HMI applications in TIA Portal WinCC - generate aesthetically simple screens for complex machinery while providing sufficient feedback for troubleshooting
- Integrate SCADA with MES and ERP systems along ISA-95 lines, supporting traceability, genealogy, and production reporting for high-volume casting
- Design scalable gateway architectures - multi-gateway, redundancy, edge nodes, and containerized deployments - with secure configuration and Git-based version control
- Implement control-reliable safety systems (ANSI/RIA R15.06, OSHA, ISO 13849) for robots, gantries, conveyors, presses, and other high-volume manufacturing equipment
- Read, interpret, and red-line industrial electrical schematics, lay out control panels that are NFPA 79 / NEC / UL 508A compliant, and produce electrical, pneumatic, and fluid schematics in EPLAN - specifying circuit protection, wire and cable, sensors, safety hardware, remote I/O, VFDs, and servo systems
- Participate in the development and enforcement of Tesla standards and manage suppliers through design reviews, FAT, installation, and start of production, traveling to supplier and installation sites as required
- Develop and maintain documentation, test methods, and commissioning procedures that reduce installation and ramp time

- Degree in Electrical, Mechatronics, Controls, or Computer Engineering, or equivalent experience
- 5+ years of professional controls engineering experience in high-volume automotive or heavy industrial manufacturing
- 5+ years of advanced PLC programming on Siemens platforms (TIA Portal, S7-1500) in a professional environment, including safety controllers, plus HMI development in TIA Portal WinCC; Rockwell/Allen-Bradley experience a plus
- 5+ years of hands-on Ignition experience (8.1 or newer), including Perspective and/or Vision, tag and UDT architecture, templates, alarming, and historian; Ignition Core or Gold certification a plus
- Strong command of industrial data protocols and standards - OPC UA, MQTT/Sparkplug B, Modbus - and ISA-95 architecture, including MES and ERP integration (SAP or equivalent) in a global manufacturing environment
- Proficiency with SQL and relational databases (MS SQL Server, MySQL) for high-velocity manufacturing data, plus scripting in Python/Jython
- Experience with gateway redundancy, edge deployments, containerization (Docker), cloud or on-premises hosting, and Git-based version control
- Proficiency reading and producing electrical schematics (EPLAN preferred) and control panel layouts in CAD, including selection of circuit protectors, wire, cable, sensors, safety hardware, remote I/O, VFDs, and servo systems
- In-depth knowledge of electrical standards (NFPA 79, National Electric Code, UL 508A) and safety standards (ANSI/RIA R15.06, OSHA, ISO 13849)
- Strong collaboration and communication skills across mechanical, process, simulation, and maintenance teams, with a track record of delivering under aggressive timelines
