About this role
Senior Civil Engineer / Project Manager (Remote)
Job Description This Senior Civil Engineer / Project Manager role offers the opportunity to lead civil site design projects while working remotely or from an office in the St. Louis area. You will take ownership of small to mid-sized civil site projects from concept through construction closeout, combining hands-on design and drafting with full project management responsibilities. The position focuses on site development, grading, drainage, utilities, and complete construction plan sets for municipal, land development, parks, public spaces, and similar projects within a small, principal-led, growing civil engineering and surveying firm. Responsibilities
- Lead civil site design for small to mid-sized projects, with a strong focus on parks, public spaces, municipal work, land development, streetscapes, trails, and conservation projects.
- Develop complete construction-ready plan sets, including grading, drainage, utility, erosion-control, and site-development plans.
- Perform and document supporting design calculations and technical reports to substantiate design decisions and meet regulatory requirements.
- Manage projects independently from concept through construction closeout, ensuring accurate, coordinated deliverables ready for client or agency submission with limited oversight.
- Coordinate permitting activities, prepare permit applications, and respond to agency review comments in a timely and professional manner.
- Handle agency and client communication, including clarifying project requirements, addressing comments, and providing status updates.
- Use Civil 3D or a similar civil CAD platform in a hands-on production role to complete drafting and design tasks personally rather than delegating all CAD work.
- Monitor project schedules, deliverables, and client expectations to ensure on-time, high-quality outcomes.
- Identify missing information, design conflicts, and schedule risks early, and proactively develop solutions to prevent larger issues.
- Maintain strong organizational and file-management practices to keep project documentation accurate, accessible, and up to date.
- Perform personal quality-control reviews on drawings, calculations, and reports to ensure accuracy and consistency.
- Communicate clearly in writing and verbally with clients, agencies, internal team members, and external collaborators.
- Work self-directed in a remote environment, maintaining reliability, responsiveness, and consistent quality of work.
- Prioritize and manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously while maintaining attention to detail.
- Collaborate with land surveying professionals when needed and incorporate survey data into site designs.
- Contribute to a culture that values competence, accuracy, ownership, clear communication, sound judgment, and strong client service.
- Optionally participate in business development activities over time, such as supporting proposals or client relationship-building, as interest and experience grow.
Essential Skills
- Extensive experience in civil site design for small to mid-sized projects, particularly in parks, public spaces, municipal work, land development, streetscapes, trails, or conservation projects.
- Strong proficiency in Civil 3D or a comparable civil CAD platform, with the ability to perform hands-on drafting and design production.
- Demonstrated ability to take projects independently from concept through construction closeout, including design, calculations, permitting, coordination, and client communication.
- Proven capability to produce complete, construction-ready plan sets that integrate grading, drainage, utilities, erosion control, and overall site development.
- Solid understanding of civil engineering fundamentals and how individual design components interact within a comprehensive site plan.
- Experience preparing design calculations and technical reports to support civil site designs.
- Ability to manage permitting processes and effectively respond to agency review comments.
- Strong organizational and file-management skills to support accurate project documentation and efficient workflows.
- Ability to perform personal quality-control reviews and maintain high standards for accuracy and completeness.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for interacting with clients, agencies, and project stakeholders.
- Self-directed, dependable work style suitable for a remote environment, with consistent responsiveness and accountability.
- Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects and deadlines while maintaining attention to detail and quality.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license strongly preferred for the Senior role, with Missouri licensure or the ability to obtain Missouri licensure ideal.
- Capability to demonstrate Senior-level independence and technical ability, especially if not currently licensed as a PE.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related discipline.
- Experience with stormwater design and site development projects.
- Experience in land surveying or familiarity with survey data integration is a plus.
- Interest in business development activities, such as supporting proposals or cultivating client relationships, is helpful but not required initially.
- Strong attention to detail and a commitment to producing accurate, coordinated work products.
- Sound judgment in knowing when to ask questions or seek input while maintaining ownership of project outcomes.
- Comfort working within a small, principal-led organization and collaborating with both W-2 team members and independent professionals.
Work Environment The role offers a flexible work environment that can be fully remote or based in an office in the St. Louis area. The firm operates as a small, principal-led organization, with a core W-2 team and a group of independent professionals collaborating on projects. Remote team members are expected to be responsive, organized, communicative, and capable of working independently without sacrificing quality. You will work directly with an experienced civil engineer who brings approximately 25 years of industry expertise. The company culture emphasizes competence, accuracy, ownership, clear communication, sound judgment, and strong client service. The long-term vision is to grow a dependable, full-time team, providing opportunities to shape processes, contribute to firm growth, and work with modern civil CAD tools in a supportive, professional environment.
