About this role

About SAGE PREP
At SAGE PREP, we believe young children are capable of more than the world often expects of them. Our classrooms honor learning through play, and then we go further: journal writing, rich academic vocabulary, and a strong foundation in literacy and numeracy. When a teacher is out, our scholars still deserve a great day of learning, and that’s where you come in.
Who You Are
You love children and can walk into any classroom ready to lead. You are dependable, quick to respond when called, and comfortable stepping into a new room, a new age group, or a new routine on short notice. You stay calm, warm, and in control, so scholars feel safe and keep learning even when their regular teacher is away. You follow plans carefully, take initiative when needed, and leave the classroom better than you found it.
How Scheduling Works
Substitute assignments are offered by text and phone call by 6:30 a.m. on the day of coverage. Substitutes who respond quickly and accept assignments consistently are first in line for future shifts.
What You’ll Do
Classroom Coverage
• Cover classrooms when teachers are absent, from infants and toddlers through Pre-K and our K-5 after school program
• Follow the lesson plans and daily schedule left by the classroom teacher
• Maintain proper ratios and keep the classroom routine consistent for scholars

Safety and Supervision
• Provide active supervision at all times, including during meals, nap time, outdoor play, transitions, arrival, and dismissal
• Complete name-to-face headcounts throughout the day
• Follow all SAGE PREP health, safety, and emergency procedures
• Release scholars only to authorized adults

Instruction and Care
• Lead engaging activities that support SAGE PREP’s literacy and numeracy expectations
• Support scholars’ social and emotional needs with patience and positive guidance
• Assist with diapering, toileting, meals, and other care routines as needed

Communication
• Leave clear written notes for the classroom teacher about the day, including activities completed, behavior, and any concerns
• Report incidents and concerns to the Director or Assistant Director promptly
• Greet families warmly at arrival and dismissal, and refer questions about scholar progress to the Director or Assistant Director

Professionalism
• Arrive on time and ready to work when scheduled
• Follow SAGE PREP’s uniform and personal phone policies; personal phones are not used in classrooms
• Keep the classroom clean, organized, and ready for the next day

What You Bring
Required
• A genuine love for children
• High school diploma or equivalent
• Experience working with young children in a school, childcare, or classroom setting
